Friends! For those in the Virginia area, I will be debating Muslim apologist and mosque president Shadid Lewis tomorrow (May 30th) at 6:30 P.M. in his mosque. The topic is "Peace and Violence in Christianity and Islam." Nabeel and I will try to post a video of the debate tomorrow night, so stay tuned!

Nadir Ahmed Declares: Shabir Ally and Ahmed Deedat Are Kafirs!

As everyone knows, Nadir Ahmed has been going around claiming that Shabir Ally's son has been cursed with blindness because Shabir supports Swoon Theory. Nadir has been criticized quite harshly (by both Muslims and Christians) for this sick claim, and he is now desperately trying to clean up the mess he's made. For instance, Nadir said in a phone conversation with Ehteshaam that he doesn't know whether Shabir has been cursed (Note: Wouldn't this admission demand a public apology? Where's the apology to Shabir?). Nadir has also claimed here that Ahmed Deedat was not cursed by God (despite Nadir's statement that he will proclaim Allah's curse consistently, whether he sees a Muslim or a Christian suffer).

It's clear, however, that Nadir is simply trying to avoid the backlash from his fellow Muslims, and that he does believe that Shabir has been cursed. Indeed, someone recently sent me a dialogue with Nadir in which everyone's least favorite Muslim apologist declares that Swoon Theory is kufr (a sign of unbelief)!

Now here's the problem. If someone believes something that is kufr, he is a kafir (an infidel or unbeliever). There is an exception, however. If someone believes in something that is kufr because of faultless ignorance (e.g. because he lives in an area without an imam to guide him), he may still be considered a Muslim. If, however, the person has had sufficient exposure to the facts, kufr makes him a kafir.

Nadir has claimed that Swoon Theory is kufr. This means that any Muslim who maintains Swoon Theory after being exposed to the evidence is a kafir. But Muslim apologists such as Shabir Ally, Ahmed Deedat, Shadid Lewis, Ehteshaam Gulam, and all Ahmadis have defended Swoon Theory. Thus, according to Nadir, Shabir Ally and Ahmed Deedat are kafirs!

If you think that's bad, wait until my next post on Nadir. Based on some articles he just sent me, I can now say that, according to Nadir, (1) Muhammad was under God's curse, (2) Allah is totally incompetent, and (3) the Qur'an is a book of lies. One wonders how a Muslim apologist can make such claims, but the evidence shows that Nadir is doing everything in his power to bring down Islam and Islam's greatest apologists. I'm amazed that so many Muslims are still putting up with this, and that so few (e.g. Yahya and Sami) are speaking out against Nadir.

The Miraculous Qur'an: Scientific Miracles

Hey guys-- the first video generated a lot of responses from Muslims, including emails. They all failed to take into consideration one basic thing about the Argument from Scientific Accuracy: it is an argument used to try to get people to see the truth of Islam. Thus, it should have persuasive power, not just defensibility. What we argue online is whether it's defensible (I say it's not) but it falls entirely short of having any persuasive power.

Hawaii Establishes Islam Day 2009

I wouldn't have as much of a problem with this if some state also had a "Christianity Day". But alas, anti-Christian sentiments are the flavor of the day, and pro-Islamic sentiments seem to be pretty popular among appeasers and new agers.

In fact, I wouldn't have a problem with this at all if "recognize 'the rich religious, scientific, cultural and artistic contributions'" also included "and learn about the history of the roots of Islam, including Muhammad and the Qur'an." Then at least the public would learn something of substance instead of celebrate something they don't understand.

Big Whopping Thanks to Yahya

Hey everyone--

If you're wondering how we can all of a sudden post large videos on YouTube even though they've discontinued their partner accounts, it's because Yahya gave us his account! Yup, Yahya told us he wasn't using his account anymore and that we could have it with all its privileges.

Unfortunately, we can't change the name to Acts17 or AnsweringMuslims, but we can upload these videos onto YouTube. This was a very kind gesture from Yahya, and Acts17 is giving out a big, public "Thank You!"

Review of the Debates

Hello everyone--

Well, it's Monday and the weekend of debates ended yesterday. I must say that there were some unexpected twists and turns during the weekend! Overall, the debates went very well.

On Saturday, we kicked off the debates with the topic "Was the Qur'an Miraculous?" True to form, Osama opened up with a 30 minute opening statement entirely dedicated to the argument from scientific accuracy. I responded with an opening statement focused on the history of the Quran (including its inception, its course, and unusual characteristics of its compilation) as well as the supposed miracle claims (literary excellence, mathematical marvels, scientific accuracy, and perfect preservation.) All in all, I feel the debate went very well for the Christian side. Osama was unable to provide satisfactory responses to the Christian arguments, preferring instead to rehash the arguments he had already made or to introduce new, equally flawed examples of the argument from scientific accuracy.

Saturday evening was the debate with Osama and David on the topic "Was Jesus Crucified?" David provided all the historical evidence for Jesus' death by crucifixion, as well as the incompatibility of Islam with a coherent account of Jesus' death. Osama chose to focus the vast majority of his case on Old Testament verses, arguing that these verses do not portray the Messiah as a man who would die. You don't have to believe me when I say David did very well in this debate; Osama himself conceded twice during the debate that David was doing much better than he was.

Sunday morning was the debate between Farhan Qureshi and David Wood on the topic "Who Was Muhammad". I have to be honest and say I was unable to watch the whole debate, but from what I did see, it was very lively and spirited.

And finally, the Sunday evening debate was between me and Farhan Qureshi on the topic "Who Was Jesus?" I provided a case very similar to the one I provided in 2006 against Farhan, focusing on the four-pronged approach to Jesus' claim to deity. However, I added two arguments to that: that the earliest Christians honored Jesus with an honor due only to Yahweh (I relied heavily on the works of Larry Hurtado for this) and that the earliest stratum of Christians ascribed to Jesus characteristics that were only ascribed to Yahweh (I relied heavily on the works of Richard Bauckham for this). Farhan's response was twofold: if we are worshiping the spirit of Jesus, then we are just worshiping the spirit of God that in a sense can be found in everyone; and that the question "Who was Jesus?" is not a historical one, but rather a theological one that is best answered after we have already chosen which book to follow, the Qur'an or the Bible. 

So I praise God for giving His truth multiple victories this weekend, and for counting David and me worthy of being His servants. I really enjoyed debating with both Osama and Farhan. Osama is remarkably cordial in person and represents Islam well (though his arguments are the exact same ones he uses online). Farhan is still one of the coolest people I know, let alone one of the coolest Muslims, and it was a pleasure debating a student of Islam with his caliber of honesty and integrity. 

We'll be uploading these videos throughout the week. Our main video site, google videos, stopped allowing uploads. So we're looking around for a new option that will be easy to use. We'd love to use youtube, but we have to cut the debate up into 10 minute segments (too annoying to do!) Anyhow, God bless you all and thanks for your prayers!

Saudi judge: It's OK to slap spendthrift wives

(CNN) -- Husbands are allowed to slap their wives if they spend lavishly, a Saudi judge said recently during a seminar on domestic violence, Saudi media reported Sunday.

Arab News, a Saudi English-language daily newspaper based in Riyadh, reported that Judge Hamad Al-Razine said that "if a person gives SR 1,200 [$320] to his wife and she spends 900 riyals [$240] to purchase an abaya [the black cover that women in Saudi Arabia must wear] from a brand shop and if her husband slaps her on the face as a reaction to her action, she deserves that punishment."

. . . Saudi women's rights activist Wajeha Al-Huwaider told CNN that Saudi women routinely face such attitudes.

"This is how men in Saudi Arabia see women," she said in a telephone interview from the Saudi city of Dahran. "It's not something they read in a book or learned from a friend. They've been raised to see women this way, that they're less than a person."

Debate: Hogan Elijah Hagbard versus Ayaz

My first public debate ever occured in October 2008 between myself and a local Muslim apologist and debater named Ayaz.

The topic was: The Bible or the Qur'an: Which is the Word of God.

Fortunately my brothers from the 'Only Way' team and members of another organisation were present under the debate and were kind enough to record the debate and work on it.

The debate will for the first time be available for everyone to watch on the website of 'The Only Way' team http://www.theonlyway.org.uk/ on Wednesday 13 May 17:00 UK time. The only Way websites focuses primarily on Asian Christians and Muslims. They have future plans to start live programes online, broadcasting live training in apologetics, debates and interviews.
At the moment they broadcast me mainly as a test for the future live channel.

To watch the debate you need to enter the website http://www.theonlyway.org.uk/ then click the box Tow-TV and then click the screen.

The debate is approximately two hours or more; I am sorry about the quality of the sound.

This was my first debate; I have to say here that Ayaz is a much better speaker and debater than me; in addition I had to struggle with the English language. Furthermore, after having watched the debate I noticed that I committed several errors, particularly speaking to fast (a serious problem I am trying to tackle at the moment), including a few wrong answers, which I doubt anyone in the crowd including Ayaz noticed. I must say I got stuck on the question being asked about the Aramaic word for God.

Beside all this I think I managed to give an answer to most of Ayaz's arguments.

It amazed me though that the Muslims were unable to deal with the number of objections I brought up.

The debate was a great event, good atmosphere and fairly calm; Ayaz appears to be a great guy with an excellent integrity. I hope to debate him again or at least that we may be able to arrange further events of this kind.

VenomFangX Threatened into Silence

Make no mistake about it. If I were a Muslim, VenomFangX would be dead, so it didn't surprise me to learn that Muslims have threatened his family. I'm actually surprised that Muslims waited so long to resort to such measures.

But I'm not a Muslim, and I believe that resorting to violence and threats is wrong. This is why I find the following video disheartening.



NOTE: I have to question VenomFangX's claim that he never meant to offend anyone's beliefs. The following videos will show what I mean. (For those who are wondering, I'm posting these videos, not because I approve of the tactics, but because free speech is being threatened and because people need to understand why VenomFangX and his family are being threatened. I saw these videos a long time ago. I never posted them because I would rather approach Muslims in a manner more conducive to discussion. With that said, the material VFX presents is quite accurate, and he certainly has the right to get his point across without his family being slaughtered.)

It's clear from these videos that VenomFangX did intend to insult Islam. Indeed, the reason that he was threatened is obviously that he is extremely talented at ridiculing the beliefs of his opponents.

Rafael Princ vs. Nadir Ahmed: Four Dialogues

I know that everyone is sick of Nadir, and that these posts may seem to be a waste of time. But the benefits will be extremely significant. Once all the facts are laid out, and all of the materials are collected, everything will be put together on a single site. Thus, whenever Nadir attempts to debate someone, or to speak in public, or to rail against people on PalTalk, he will be bombarded with the facts, which will be readily available to all. This will put an end once and for all to Nadir's self aggrandizement.

People are continuing to send me materials on Nadir. In this post, I'd like to consider Nadir's dealings with Rafael Princ, whom Nadir has backed down from repeatedly. (So much for Nadir's claim that everyone is running from him. In the following exchanges, we see that Nadir is the one running.)

In this next exchange, Nadir declares that he is the greatest Muslim debater in the world. He also calls Shabir Ally a "fool" (not to mention a heretic) and says that all Muslims agree on this. (I find this strange, since when I attend a Shabir Ally debate, I see hundreds of Muslims there to support him. But when I attend a Nadir Ahmed debate, we can't even bribe Muslims to show up.)

DIALOGUE THREE: NADIR BACKS DOWN AGAIN

As everyone who interacts with Nadir knows, he seems to follow a standard pattern, which consists of the following steps:

Step One: Nadir challenges Christian X to a debate in an extremely boastful, rude manner. If Christian X refuses to debate because of Nadir's foul language, constant insults, lack of credentials, and lack of Muslim support, Nadir says that Christian X is running from his arguments.

Step Two: If Christian X, for whatever reason, agrees to debate, Nadir attempts to twist and mangle the topic and the debate format until the debate becomes absolutely unacceptable. If Christian X refuses to accept the debate due to Nadir's unreasonable and absurd terms, Nadir says that Christian X is running from his arguments. (For more on this, see "Nadir Ahmed's Amazing Debate Format.")

Step Three: If Christian X agrees to Nadir's outrageous terms and goes through with the debate, Nadir will be completely crushed in front of the audience. At the end of such humiliating defeats, Nadir will challenge Christian X to another debate. By this time, of course, Christian X is thoroughly fed up with Nadir and never wants to deal with him again. Christian X has also already defeated Nadir in public, which makes further humiliation unnecessary. At this point, Nadir declares to everyone that Christian X has refused to engage in another debate with him, and that this can only mean that Christian X is running from his arguments. (To see some examples of this, watch the end of Nadir's debates with Sam Shamoun and James White, where Nadir, sensing his total defeat, challenges both opponents to further debates. Nadir later says that they're running from him when they refuse.)

The following dialogue is a good illustration of Step Two. Rafael agrees to debate Nadir on whether Islam is from God, but Nadir insists that Rafael must not be allowed to offer evidence against Islam! Can anyone even imagine such a format? Wouldn't Muslims laugh at me if I said: "All right, we're going to have a debate on the Deity of Christ. I'm going to offer reasons for believing in the Deity of Christ, and my opponent is free to discuss my reasons. But under no circumstances is my opponent allowed to present evidence against the Deity of Christ." Nadir was obviously attempting to make the format unbearable, so that Rafael wouldn't agree to Nadir's ridiculous terms (at which point Nadir declares that Rafael is running from his arguments).

DIALOGUE FOUR: NADIR SAYS THAT CHRISTIANS ARE RUNNING FROM HIM, RAFAEL ONCE AGAIN AGREES TO DEBATE HIM, AND NADIR CHANGES THE SUBJECT

In the following dialogue, Nadir claims that he has a "huge support base." Where is this support base? Nadir once had to come on this blog under a false name to pretend that someone supports him.

Notice that Rafael again agrees to debate Nadir. What does Nadir do? Does he accept? Of course not. He changes the subject and tries to say that Sam Shamoun (who crushed him horribly here) is running from him. Follow Nadir's reasoning (or lack thereof). Nadir has a man repeatedly asking to debate him, and Nadir keeps backing down and changing the subject. Then, when he changes the subject, it's to show that everyone is scared to debate him!

Nadir is certainly one of a kind. We couldn't invent stuff like this if we tried.

These four dialogues show Nadir's complete inconsistency. When Nadir challenges someone to a debate, the conversation usually goes something like this:

NADIR: "Hey, Mr. Christian Scholar! You have to debate me! I'm Islam's greatest debater! All other Muslim debaters suck compared to me! And if you don't debate me, you're a coward! Now debate me so I can expose your filthy religion!"

CHRISTIAN SCHOLAR: "Wow, you behave like a child. I'm simply not interested in debating people who behave like children. Besides, I contacted some Muslims about you, and most of them have no clue who you are. Those who know you told me that you're one of the worst debaters who's ever lived, and that the Muslim community has absolutely no respect for you. Beyond this, you have no credentials whatsoever, you constantly insult your opponents, and some people think you're insane."

NADIR: "LOL! LLLLOOOOOOOLLLLL! I knew you were a coward! You're running from my arguments! Just like all the other Christian cowards who backed down from me! Look, when someone challenges you to a debate, you have to accept! If you don't accept, you're a fat coward! It's that simple! Coward! Coward! Coward!"

But what happens when Nadir is challenged? As we've seen, the conversations go something like this:

CHRISTIAN: "Nadir, I challenge you to debate me."

NADIR: "Um, let's talk about someone else. Hey, that Sam Shamoun is running from me!"

CHRISTIAN: "You mean the same Sam Shamoun who humiliated you in one of the most one-sided debates in history?"

NADIR: "Yeah, that's him. He's scared to death of me. I went to his office and he hid from me."

CHRISTIAN: "So are you going to debate me or not?"

NADIR: "Not so fast. There's some other Christian on the internet who said something false about me one time. I'd like to focus on him for a while."

CHRISTIAN: "He doesn't want to debate you. But I do. I'm right here. Come on. Let's do this."

NADIR: "Um, did I mention Sam Shamoun already? He's scared of me."

If someone refuses to debate Nadir because he has no credentials, is a complete liar, has no support from the Muslim community, has no knowledge of either Christianity or Islam, and behaves like a nine-year-old boy, Nadir says he must be scared. Yet when someone challenges Nadir, again and again, to debate a basic topic, and Nadir actually runs out of the room, this is somehow completely reasonable. Then Nadir goes around telling everyone that Christians are scared of him. Is it just me, or is this absolutely pathetic?
