Allah: The Author of Islamophobia

Politicians and the media often accuse Western critics of Islam of spreading Islamophobia (the irrational fear of Islam). When we turn to Islam's most trusted sources, however, we find that Islamophobia has a different source—namely, Allah himself.

Is it Racist to Criticize Islam?

Until I entered the arena of apologetics to Muslims, I could never have imagined that some people would consider criticism of ideas to be tantamount to racism. I quickly learned, however, that there are indeed some who see it as such.

One such individual, Paul Williams of BloggingTheology.net, is one of them. Recently, on Twitter, a discussion broke out between a friend of mine and Paul Williams on the identity of the suffering servant in Isaiah 53. I suggested to Paul Williams that we engage in a moderated debate on whether Isaiah 53 is Messianic. Among his reasons for declining my invitation, he tweeted this:

Racial abuse of Muslims... Seriously? Since when was Islam considered a race? And since when was the criticism of ideas tantamount to racism? "Racial abuse" is a serious charge, implying either physical or verbal assault.

It is certainly true that Williams and I part ways on many issues, including the justifiability, from the Qur'an and other Islamic sources, of atrocities committed by the Islamic State and other groups. This, however, is an academic difference of opinion on how to best interpret those sources. I hold no ill-feeling whatsoever towards Muslim people. In fact, my heart is filled with compassion for them, and I long for them to be saved by the same grace that saved me.

I of course recognise that, while the Islamic State represent a valid expression of Islam, they are not normative for all Muslims. Muslims are a very diverse group of people, and I have long recognized the folly of branding or stereotyping all Muslims in any particular way.

In refutation of Williams' false and defamatory allegation, my friend, Gunter, helpfully linked to a post of mine on Facebook from early December of 2015, in which I repudiated in the strongest of terms Christians who agreed with the anti-Muslim immigration policy promoted by Donald Trump:

It truly saddens me that such defamatory tactics are exercised all too commonly among many of the internet Muslim polemicists.

Ahmed Mohamed and the Myth of Islamophobia

Ahmed Mohamed is a fourteen-year-old Texas ninth grader who brought a clock to school to show to his teachers. (As we will see below, Ahmed didn't build a clock. He simply removed the outer casing from an ordinary digital clock.)

For years, schools have been encouraged by liberals to adopt a "zero tolerance" approach, leading to elementary school students getting suspended for bringing a Nerf gun to school or for chewing a Pop-Tart into the shape of a gun. While the "zero tolerance" policy has led to some absurd results, the media react much differently when the victim of the policy is a Muslim.

Ahmed's teachers decided to err on the side of caution and called police when they thought the clock looked similar to a bomb. For the record, I think their reaction was silly, and I certainly don't believe that Ahmed should have been removed from the school in handcuffs. However, I can understand how someone would conclude that Ahmed had put together a "hoax bomb," especially with a "zero tolerance" policy in place. Consider the following pictures. The top is a suitcase bomb; the bottom is Ahmed's clock.

There is clearly some resemblance, though I'm assuming that Ahmed's clock was much smaller and couldn't pass for a real bomb. But again, teachers are positively encouraged to be suspicious.

Hence, all we can fairly say is that teachers and police, constantly hounded into adopting a "zero tolerance" policy towards anything that looks like a weapon, went overboard and arrested a teenager for building a clock.

But that's not what's being said. Teachers and police are being accused of racism and Islamophobia, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (unindicted co-conspirators in a terrorism funding case) is using Ahmed's story as their latest proof that America is filled with anti-Muslim bigots. Here's a small sample from CAIR's Twitter page to show the mileage the organization is getting from this story:

Of course, CAIR hasn't bothered to present the slightest evidence that Ahmed's arrest had anything to do with Islamophobia. Teachers and police, for all we know, would have acted exactly the same way if the clock had been brought in by a Christian, a Hindu, or a Jew. We might think that CAIR would be more careful when accusing someone of hatred and bigotry, but CAIR only seems to insist on not "jumping to conclusions" when a jihadist is slaughtering infidels.

Due to the instant international outrage, Ahmed has since been invited to the White House by President Barack Obama, been invited to Facebook headquarters by Mark Zuckerberg, and been offered internships at Twitter and Reddit. These invites are supposedly based on his knack for inventing things. However, Dr. Thomas Talbot has shown that Ahmed didn't invent anything. He simply removed the outer casing from a standard store-bought alarm clock and put the insides into his own box.

(If you're wondering whether Dr. Talbot is qualified, he's a research scientist at the Institute for Creative Technologies at the University of Southern California and Chief Scientist for the Armed Forces Simulation Institute for Medicine at the Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center.)

So here's what we have. A teenager took the casing off an alarm clock and put the rest into a box, then brought the box to school. His teachers, pressed into adopting "zero tolerance" policies, thought the device looked similar to a bomb and called the police. Police, suspecting that the student may have intended the clock as a "hoax bomb," removed the student from school in handcuffs. Because the student is a Muslim, the story has been spun into a narrative of bigotry, racism, and Islamophobia by organizations like CAIR and the media and politicians who mindlessly do their bidding. The student, who simply removed the casing from a clock, is now being praised for his brilliance and is about to head to the White House.

What message does this really send to young people?

Though I never agreed much with the late Christopher Hitchens, he was spot-on when he defined Islamophobia as "a word invented by fascists and used by cowards to manipulate morons."

Reading Is Islamophobic

Some people complain about Islam because of the endless terrorist attacks they read about every day. Others complain about Islam because they read the Qur'an and Hadith and find incredibly violent teachings. No matter how you look at it, reading is a source of Islamophobia. Never thought I'd see something like this at the Huffington Post.

Huffington Post—As of this writing, the National September 11 Memorial Museum still hasn't caved in. But the pressure is building, and it feels very familiar. 

The problem is a seven-minute film being shown at the soon-to-open museum called The Rise of Al Qaeda. Narrated by NBC's Brian Williams, it uses words like "Islamist," "Islamic," and "jihad" in reference to the 9/11 hijackers and their motives.

Some Muslim groups, and others like the Interfaith Center of New York, want the film edited to remove those terms. They don't want the public to think that Islamism or jihad had anything to do with Al Qaeda or the 9/11 attacks, because that could foster "Islamophobia." We've so been down this road before.

As a brown-skinned person with a Muslim name, I can get away with a lot more than you'd think. I can publicly parade my wife or daughters around in head-to-toe burqas and be excused out of "respect" for my culture and/or religion, thanks to the racism of lowered expectations. I can re-define "racism" as something non-whites can never harbor against whites, and cite colonialism and imperialism as justification for my prejudice.

And in an increasingly effective move that's fast become something of an epidemic, I can shame you into silence for criticizing my ideas simply by calling you bigoted or Islamophobic.

For decades, Muslims around the world have rightly complained about the Israeli government labeling even legitimate criticism of its policies "anti-Semitic," effectively shielding itself from accountability. Today, Muslim organizations like CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) have borrowed a page from their playbook with the "Islamophobia" label -- and taken it even further.

In addition to calling out prejudice against Muslims (a people), the term "Islamophobia" seeks to shield Islam itself (an ideology) from criticism. It's as if every time you said smoking was a filthy habit, you were perceived to be calling all smokers filthy people. Human beings have rights and are entitled to respect. But when did we start extending those rights to ideas, books, and beliefs? You'd think the difference would be clear, but it isn't. The ploy has worked over and over again, and now everyone seems petrified of being tagged with this label.

The phobia of being called "Islamophobic" is on the rise -- and it's becoming much more rampant, powerful, and dangerous than Islamophobia itself. (Continue Reading.)

Kassim Alhimidi Found Guilty in Honor Killing of Wife Shaima Alawadi

Shaima Alawadi was brutally murdered by her husband Kassim Alhimidi for seeking a divorce. Yet Alhimidi was smart enough to use the media's obsession with "Islamophobia" to deflect attention from his guilt. After murdering his wife, Alhimidi placed a note nearby saying, "This is my country. Go back to yours, terrorist." The media finally had its proof that criticism of jihad and sharia is a threat to the safety of Muslims, and stories about Islamophobia were splashed across newspapers, magazines, and websites.

Police, however, weren't as gullible as the media. Instead of jumping to conclusions about bigotry and racism, they examined the evidence and realized that Alawadi was murdered by her husband, not by an Islamophobe.

SAN DIEGO (CNS/CBS 8) - A jury Thursday found an East County man guilty in the murder of his estranged wife, prompting an outburst by several family members in the courtroom.

Kassim Alhimidi, 49, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of 32-year-old Shaima Alawadi. He will be sentenced on May 15. He faces 26 years to life in prison.

After the verdict was read several people in the courtroom began shouting, and at least two people were taken out by deputies. Alhimidi was seen repeatedly shook his head, waved his finger and appeared to be praying.

A photocopied note found about eight to 10 feet from the victim read, "This is my country. Go back to yours, terrorist," leading investigators to initially believe Alawadi's killing may have been a hate crime.

Prosecutor Kurt Mechals said the defendant, upset that his wife wanted a divorce, killed her by hitting her at least six times in the head with a blunt object as she sat at a computer.

Alhimidi said he was out for a drive when his wife was killed the morning of March 21, 2012, but surveillance video taken from a nearby school showed his van and a dark-clothed person coming and going in the area of the family home on Skyview Drive around the time the victim was attacked, Mechals said.

Alawadi had told relatives she "couldn't stand" the defendant and had taken out divorce papers, the prosecutor said.

"The relationship was in the tank. It was bad," Mechals told the jury.

The couple's then-17-year-old daughter, Fatima, told police she was upstairs when she heard a "squeal," then later what sounded like a broken plate downstairs around 11 a.m. the day her mother was attacked. A pane from a sliding glass door had been broken from the inside, Mechals said.

Fatima -- who had stayed home from school -- thought her mother had fallen, but paramedics first on the scene said blood and other evidence was inconsistent with a fall.

Fatima had been at odds with her Muslim parents for dating a Chaldean, but she had no motive to kill her mother, according to Mechals, who told jurors it was "unreasonable to think she (Fatima) had anything to do with it."

After his wife was taken to the hospital, Alhimidi asked relatives "what do you think will happen if she wakes up and says I hit her?" Mechals said. (Continue Reading.)

Canadian College Student Anisa Rawhani Dons Hijab to Learn about Islamophobia, Finds That People Are Nicer to Her

Western nations are far more tolerant than Muslim nations, which is why it's so odd to hear Muslim groups like CAIR and ISNA constantly complain about bigotry and Islamophobia in America and Europe. Indeed, if one were to judge Western nations by these endless complaints, we would expect that as soon as a woman puts on a hijab, she will be bombarded with with insults.

That's exactly what a Canadian student set out to test. She decided to wear a hijab in public to see if she would be treated differently. And she found that, when pretending to be a Muslim, she was treated better by strangers, not worse.

Daily Mail—A Canadian college student recently conducted a social experiment to see if people treated her differently if she wore a hijab - a traditional Muslim veil that covers a woman's head and chest - and what she discovered was a bit unexpected.

Anisa Rawhani, a third-year student at Queens University in Ontario, wore the traditional Muslim garb for 18 days in January as she worked at the university's library, visited stores and restaurants near the campus and as she did volunteer work with local children.

According to Rawhani - who conducted the experiment to see if people in her community were racist towards minority groups - she noticed that people actually treated her more kindly and with more respect than when she didn't wear the hijab.

Rawhani, who is not Muslim, wrote about her experience wearing traditional Muslim clothing in the March edition of the Queen's Journal, where she works as a copy editor - the article is titled 'Overt to Covert.'

'At first I thought I was just imagining things. There's no way this is actually happening,' Rawhani told the Whig.com.

'I went with my hijab and people were very nice, people were polite, parents would shake my hand, so the experience was all across the board in Kingston.'

In some cases, she says, she would go out with friends who weren't wearing any identifying religious symbols and she was treated much nicer than they were.

'There was this excess (of niceness) that I would experience that I couldn't account for,' she said. 'Like really going the extra mile like smiling broadly and being so so polite, which I've never experienced before. It was a stark contrast that was going on that threw me for a loop.' Will the Real Perverts Please Stand Up?

If you think heaven will be like a great big brothel in the sky, where worthy males will get 70 virgins with “appetizing vaginas,” and where men will have “eternal erections,” you might be a Muslim.

On the other hand, if you read that comment about “eternal erections” and thought Muslims believe they will never go limp in paradise, then you are a pervert and an Islamophobe.

Or so goes the reasoning of Muslim Yahya Snow, who is quite concerned to get the word out. 

At the end of his article, after setting the record straight for all the perverts out there, believing he has shown just how appetizing Islam is, Yahya asks if anyone would like to know more about Islam.

My answer to that question is: “I think you have already told all of us more than we ever wanted to know, but thanks anyways. You might give Hugh Heffner or Larry Flynt a call. I have a hunch they might be interested in what you are offering, though they might be a little put out by the fact that Muhammad thought of it first.”

[I would like to thank Yahya Snow for this eye-opening revelation into what Muslims mean when they call someone a “pervert” and an “Islamophobe.” I am now a lot more comfortable accepting those labels.]

James White vs. MuslimByChoice on "Islamophobia"

MuslimByChoice once again brought some spitballs to a gunfight. The depth of Islamic apologetics has never been impressive, and it's only getting worse.

I hope James is rejoicing that Muslims are resorting to silly personal attacks against him. It means they're worried about the impact he's making. But since they can't respond rationally, they're forced to respond irrationally. The result is a childish display of sheer desperation.

Another Huffington Post Hate Crime Fizzles (Aisha Khan Found Safe)

Several months ago, Anders Breivik killed dozens of Norwegian teenagers. Shortly after the attack, a Muslim terrorist group claimed responsibility. Following this admission of guilt, I put together a blog post suggesting that the evidence pointed towards Islamic terrorism. Of course, the terrorist group was only lying. However, both I and everyone else who suspected Muslims were condemned for our "Islamophobia." Apparently, anyone who believes Muslims when they claim responsibility is a racist. The "tolerant" thing to do is to automatically assume Muslims are lying. Quite a paradox.

So what happens when the tables are turned, and the liberal media cry "Islamophobia" and "Hate Crime" when no such thing has occurred?

In a recent Huffington Post article about Islamophobia and the Lowe's controversy, Daniel Tutt drew his readers' attention to two vicious hate crimes against Muslims--clear proof that Islamophobia is rampant and spreading:

In the background of this grassroots work, two tragic events have taken place, which reveal the real world "human impact" of Islamophobia. In Kansas City, a young Muslim college student, Aisha Khan has gone missing after complaining to her family of a drunken man harassing her. In Houston, Texas a Muslim man named Yaqub Bham was severely beaten in what family members are calling a hate crime. These events show the urgency of the problem at hand.

What evidence did Tutt have to support his claims? A Muslim student went missing after a drunken man harassed her. Tutt sees this as clear proof that Khan was abducted by anti-Muslim bigots (probably those who regularly visit Jihad Watch and Atlas Shrugs). And a Muslim man's family is calling an attack a "hate crime." Tutt doesn't bother questioning this assessment at all.

Now for the reality check. Aisha Khan wasn't abducted at all. ABC News reported this morning:

Aisha Khan, the 19-year-old Kansas college student missing for nearly a week has been found safe and unharmed, according to ABC News' Kansas City affiliate KMBC.

Overland Park Police Officer Brian Schnavel said that Khan was not abducted or held against her will, according to KMBC.

Schnavel said no criminal act occurred.

Will Tutt apologize for falsely accusing Americans of a hate crime against a Muslim girl? We can only hope.

As for Tutt's other example of Islamophobia, the evidence isn't in yet. However, based on the reports so far, the man who committed the attack seems to be insane. According to the Houston Chronicle:

Yaqub Bham's visit to a residence in Tomball on Wednesday was supposed to be routine for the 61-year-old ADT salesman, who had come to inspect a client's property before installing a home security system.

Instead, the homeowner, David L. Nienberg, allegedly tried to stab Bham with a fork, bit off part of his ear, and beat him so badly that he broke 10 ribs.

Nienberg, 42, of Tomball, is charged with aggravated assault. If convicted, he could serve from two to 20 years in prison.

Bham's distraught family members want the incident investigated as a possible hate crime against Bham, a Muslim native of Pakistan who became an American citizen in 2007.They say an agitated Nienberg became violent after asking Bham about the origin of his name and where he was from.

Harris County sheriff's deputies who responded to a 911 call from Nienberg's family about 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday did not mention the questions about Bham's name and origins in their report, said Deputy Thomas Gilliland, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office.

Gilliland said Nienberg apparently became angry while reviewing the contract for a security system in his four-bedroom home on Everhart Pointe Drive. When Bham offered to make another contract, or change it, "the defendant took the backpack that Mr. Bham had and wouldn't give him the backpack, which contained the keys to his vehicle," Gilliland said.

The two men's verbal disagreement then became physical, the deputy said.

Nienberg lunged at Bham with a fork, Gilliland said he was told. Relatives took the implement away, but Nienberg allegedly managed to get Bham in a choke hold, beat him, and bite him while muttering about military operations.

When deputies arrived, Nienberg refused to let go of Bham until they "secured the perimeter" and "secured women personnel," Gilliland said.

It took three deputies to pull Nienberg off Bham, he said. They deployed Tasers on Nienberg twice, and even then, the furious man continued to kick and spit after they wrestled him into a patrol car, said Gilliland.

For all I know, Nienberg may be a vicious hate-monger. But we don't know that based on any evidence yet. All we know is that he bit part of a man's ear off and bit the man's tongue, while rambling about securing a perimeter, just before being tased by police. Nienberg sounds either crazy or under the influence of drugs. If further evidence should surface indicating that he attacked Bham due to his ethnicity or religious beliefs, I will gladly condemn him for bigotry. In the meantime, I don't see any evidence of Islamophobia.

But Daniel Tutt does, and we should find this incredibly disturbing. Tutt doesn't want a missing girl to be found unharmed. He wants her to be the victim of Islamophobia. Tutt doesn't want a Pakistani man to be the victim of an attack by a lunatic. He wants him to be the victim of an Islamophobe.

Tutt and his liberal colleagues, who somehow manage to see bigotry and Islamophobia wherever they look, are the same reporters who tell us that Lowe's succumbed to anti-Muslim bigotry. But if a reporter is wearing red-colored glasses, how can we believe him when he says, "This store is red"?

FBI Statistics Belie Islamophobia Hysteria

No one plays the "victim" role like Muslims. But should we take their constant cries of "Racism!" and "Islamophobia!" seriously? The evidence suggests we shouldn't.

COMMENTARY--It has become an accepted trope of contemporary journalism that American Muslims are under siege and beset by hatred and prejudice. But the evidence for this conventional wisdom is lacking. The story line of Muslim persecution in the United States has always been a matter of anecdotes and perception, not facts. That truth was confirmed this week when the FBI released their annual crime statistics report which showed once again that hate crimes against Muslims remain rare and are far outnumbered by attacks on Jews.

The report is not perfect, since not all parts of the country do a good job compiling the data, but it provides an important snapshot of the state of the nation regarding bias crimes. But the numbers speak for themselves. In 2010, only 13.2 percent of religion-based attacks were directed at Muslims. By comparison, 65.4 percent of such crimes were directed at Jews. This shows a slight increase over the last two years (the raw numbers show 887 anti-Jewish attacks with only 160 anti-Muslim attacks), but is not a statistical fluke. In 2009, the FBI reported that 70.1 percent of religious-based hate crimes were anti-Jewish while only 9.3 percent were anti-Islamic. In 2008, the FBI said 66.1 percent were anti-Jewish while 7.5 percent were anti-Muslim. This has been true of every year in the past decade, even in 2001 when anti-Muslim crime spiked in the wake of 9/11. For all of the breast-beating about Islamophobia in this country, anti-Semitism remains a far greater problem.

As I wrote last year when I debunked the mythical backlash against Muslims in an article in the October 2010 issue of COMMENTARY, the notion of a rising wave of hatred against Muslims is unsupported by any statistical research. When you consider that Muslims claim to have about the same number of adherents in this country as Jews and that anti-Jewish crimes have always far outnumbered those committed against Muslims, the media hysteria about Islamophobia is exposed as a big lie. But even if there are fewer Muslims here than their groups claim, the conclusion is unchanged.

Because the far greater number of attacks on Jews is not viewed (even by those groups dedicated to monitoring anti-Semitism such as the Anti-Defamation League) as proof the country is boiling with hatred for Jews, how can anyone rationally argue that the far fewer number of assaults on Muslims can justify the conclusion that Islamophobia is rampant? Robert Spencer: N.J. Murder the Latest Outrage in the Islamic Blame Game

Muslims take advantage of the Islamophobia myth in various ways. Groups like CAIR attempt to insulate Islam from criticism by screaming "Bigotry!" at anyone who dares challenge Muhammad's commands to murder, rape, and subjugate non-Muslims. The media are all too happy to give Muslims the platform after every terrorist attack (in order to reduce Islamophobia, you see), so ABC, NBC, and CNN end up becoming tools for Islamic dawah following incidents of Jihad. Now, it seems, Islamophobia is being used to throw off police when Muslims commit crimes. Just point a finger at Islamophobes, and you might get away with murder.

Human Events--On Friday, a young Muslim man in New Jersey named Kashif Pervaiz was charged with the murder of his wife, Nazish Noorani, who was shot dead Tuesday night while pushing her 3-year-old son in a stroller on a street in Boonton, N.J.

Although the case apparently has nothing whatsoever to do with jihad terrorism, Islamic honor killing, or any such matter, it has been illuminating of the Islamic supremacist strategy to suppress free speech about Islam and jihad in the U.S. today.

Pervaiz, you see, was walking with Noorani when the shooting took place. He had allegedly set up the whole thing with his accomplice mistress, a Boston woman with whom he apparently shares an apartment. And according to the New York Post, Pervaiz initially told police that “three men, one black, one white and one of an uncertain race, called the couple terrorists before opening fire.” That was enough for police to investigate the possibility that the shooting was an anti-Muslim hate crime—that is, until Pervaiz began changing his story, and began to emerge as a suspect.

Islamic supremacists never miss a chance to position Muslims as victims so as to deflect attention away from jihad terror and try to place Islam and the Muslim community beyond reasonable scrutiny. And so even as Pervaiz was starting to equivocate and spin ever-taller tales, the blame game began. I received a tweet from a certain Jawad Rasul, containing a link to one of the initial stories about the murder: “If you have any humanity, you might ponder over this!” Meanwhile, a well-placed source told me that Ibrahim Hooper of the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) was “salivating and waiting to jump all over” the Noorani murder story. “They are waiting to blame you for everything.” (Read more.)

Islamophobiaphobia

That dread epithet: "Islamophobic!" It seems nearly every measure is taken to avoid it. Even discussing the obvious, such as "Perhaps Nidal Hasan did what he did because of his Islamic convictions" can land a label of libel for the good-willed.

But, praise God, people are finally catching onto this disease, this politically correctitis leading to paralysis by fear and ultimately terminal niceness. According to Dorothy Rabinowitz, author of an opinion article on the Wall Street Journal:

What is hard to ignore, now, is the growing derangement on all matters involving terrorism and Muslim sensitivities. Its chief symptoms: a palpitating fear of discomfiting facts and a willingness to discard those facts and embrace the richest possible variety of ludicrous theories as to the motives behind an act of Islamic terrorism. All this we have seen before but never in such naked form. The days following the Fort Hood rampage have told us more than we want to know, perhaps, about the depth and reach of this epidemic.

This article is an excellent read. Highly suggested. And, in order to further battle the incidence ratio of this disease, I would like to fully quote Imam Aulaqi, the man who presided over the burial of Major Hasan's mother and who seemingly influenced his theology:

Nidal Hasan is a hero ... Nidal opened fire on soldiers who were on their way to be deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. How can there be any dispute about the virtue of what he has done? In fact the only way a Muslim could Islamically justify serving as a soldier in the US army is if his intention is to follow the footsteps of men like Nidal.

The heroic act of brother Nidal also shows the dilemma of the Muslim American community. Increasingly they are being cornered into taking stances that would either make them betray Islam or betray their nation. Many amongst them are choosing the former.

The Muslim organisations in America came out in a pitiful chorus condemning Nidal's operation ... The inconsistency of being a Muslim today and living in America and the west in general reveals the wisdom behind the opinions that call for migration from the west. It is becoming more and more difficult to hold on to Islam in an environment that is becoming more hostile towards Muslims.

In light of Major Hasan's use of Allah's name as a battle cry, his inclinations against the US military's involvement abroad, and his clear association with pro-terrorist imams, I'm calling this what it is: Violence in the name of Islam, based off of Islamic doctrine. Take that, Islamophobiaphobia.
