What's to stop jihadists from entering the Iraqi army? Not much, apparently. Here's how things stand at the Iraqi recruiting office.

RECRUITING AGENT: "Well, we're trying to turn our country into a modern democracy. Are you sure you're not a jihadist?"
JIHADIST: "I'm sure."
RECRUITING AGENT: "Promise?"

RECRUITING AGENT: "All right, you're in. Say, do you have any tattoos?"

JIHADIST: "It's a quotation from Muhammad. It says, 'War is deceit.' By the way, when do I get my gun?"

But if we just keep proclaiming that Islam is a religion of peace, maybe the jihadists will reach out for hugs.

BAGHDAD – Two U.S. troops were killed Saturday by an Iraqi soldier who apparently smuggled real bullets into a training exercise and opened fire, raising fresh concerns about insurgents worming into the nation's security forces as the Americans prepare to leave by the year's end.

A U.S. military official said the shooter was immediately killed by American soldiers who were running the morning drill at a training center on a U.S. base in the northern city of Mosul. The U.S. official said the exercise was not meant to involve live ammunition, and an Iraqi army officer said the shooting appeared to have been planned.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information. A U.S. statement confirmed that two soldiers were killed and a third was wounded by small-arms fire by what the military described as "an individual wearing an Iraqi army uniform." (Read more.)

Twelve Muslim Militants Walk Out of Prison in Police Uniforms

It's good to see that the new government has things under control.

Twelve militants linked to al-Qaeda have broken out of a prison in Basra in southern Iraq, the authorities say.

The men were awaiting trial when they obtained police uniforms and walked out of the detention centre - in one of Saddam Hussein's former palaces - before dawn, security officials said.

They are said to have ties with the Islamic State of Iraq - a Sunni insurgent group affiliated to al-Qaeda.

All the prison guards have been arrested and a manhunt is under way.

"Of course, there was collusion from within the compound, but we do not know who is involved at the moment," said Ali Ghanim al-Maliki, head of the security committee at Basra's provincial council. (Read more.)

British Report: Pedophilia Culturally Acceptable in Southern Afghanistan

I would rather not continue posting on these issues, but I feel that the issues must be brought to light, for two reasons. First, Muslim leaders will often only deal with an internal problem if the problem gains worldwide attention. Second, it's common for Western Muslims to employ what we might call an "Argument from Moral Superiority," which runs something like this: "Morality among Muslims is vastly superior to that among non-Muslims. This must be due to the religion. Hence, Islam is the religion that promotes the highest morality. Clearly, the religion that promotes the highest morality must be the true religion." There are numerous problems with this argument. The main problem is that there is a tremendous amount of immorality in the Muslim world, and Muslims often refuse to do anything about it.

Paedophilia 'culturally accepted in south Afghanistan'

Older, powerful men boosted their social status by keeping boys as sexual playthings and the practice was celebrated in song and dance, a military study claimed.

British officers in Helmand requested the study to help them understand the sexual behaviour of locals and Afghan comrades after young soldiers became uneasy they were being propositioned.

American social scientists employed to help troops understand the local culture reported that homosexual sex was widespread among the Pashtun ethnic group in southern Afghanistan.

Strict separation of men and women, coupled with poverty and the significant expense of getting married, contributed to young men turning to each other for sexual companionship.

"To dismiss the existence of this dynamic out of desire to avoid western discomfort is to risk failing to comprehend an essential social force underlying Pashtun culture," the report said.

The study, called 'Pashtun Sexuality', said that as well as willing sex between young men, "boys are appreciated for physical beauty and apprenticed to older men for their sexual initiation".

The practice of 'bache bazi' or boy play, is known throughout Afghanistan, but is particularly renowned in the city of Kandahar next to Helmand, where prepubescent boys are widely admired.

Western soldiers often report feeling unease at the attentions of their Afghan comrades, who are affectionate with each other and sometimes wear make-up. (Read more.)

CAIR Removes Poster That Called Muslims To Avoid Working with FBI

Most terrorist attacks in America have been foiled, sometimes due to the work of federal agents scrutinizing the Muslim community. Apparently, the Council on American-Islamic Relations isn't too pleased with this. They recently posted a sign calling for Muslims to shun FBI agents attempting to thwart terrorists. After Much criticism, CAIR removed the sign. As usual, CAIR blames "Islamophobia."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations said it will remove a poster from the group's website promoting an upcoming conference that encourages people not to talk to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The poster, which appeared on the website of CAIR’s California chapter, features a sinister-looking FBI agent with the headlines “Build a Wall of Resistance” and “Don’t Talk to the FBI.” The poster was designed in the late 1970s or early 1980s and has been reproduced by various groups and activists since then in response to alleged harassment by the FBI and to protest grand jury subpoenas.

“I think it’s subject to misinterpretation,” spokesman Ibrahim Hooper told Fox News Radio when speaking about the poster. “We decided out of extreme caution to take it down.”

The poster was promoting a conference called “FBI Raids and Grand Jury Subpoenas: Know Your Rights and Defend Our Communities.” The keynote speaker is Hatem Abudayyeh, identified by CAIR as an activist and Palestinian community leader whose home was allegedly raided by federal agents in September.

The conference is scheduled for Feb. 9 at the East Side Cultural Center in Oakland.

Hooper conceded the poster “crosses the line,” but refused to renounce the artwork and blamed critics for fomenting what he called a manufactured controversy.

“The entire American-Muslim community is under the microscope right now with a cottage industry of Muslim bashers,” he said. “We’re used to this kind of attack by the Islamophobic hate machine and in this case there is some justification in terms of the possibility of misinterpretation of this poster.” (Read more.)

U.K. Imam Mohammed Hanif Khan Charged with Raping Boys as Young as Twelve

Muslims tell us that Islam will rescue the West from immorality.

A Muslim worship leader is accused of raping a 12-year-old boy during visits to a mosque for religious lessons.

Mohammed Hanif Khan, 42, is alleged to have sexually assaulted the boy inside the Stoke on Trent mosque where he worked as the imam.

He is also charged with the attempted rape of and sexual activity with the boy's cousin, who was 15 at the time, as he stayed over at his home one evening.

Khan, who appeared in front of Nottingham Crown Court yesterday wearing a black suit, white shirt and red tie, spoke only to confirm his name and to enter not guilty pleas to all eight charges against him.

Khan, from Sheffield, is charged with three counts of rape, four counts of attempted rape and one count of sexual activity with a child, all of which are alleged to have taken place on various dates between July 1, 2009 and October 16, 2009. (Read more.)

Another Gang Rape of an Australian Infidel

According to Islam, Muslim men are allowed to have sex with two kinds of women: their wives, and women they're able to capture.

Qur’an 23:1-6—The believers must (eventually) win through—those who humble themselves in their prayers; who avoid vain talk; who are active in deeds of charity; who abstain from sex, except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess—for (in their case) they are free from blame.

Sadly, some Muslims actually take these teachings seriously.

Seven males have been charged with the gang rape of a woman in Bendigo.

Police allege the men unlawfully imprisoned and repeatedly raped the woman at a residence in Flora Hill early on Sunday.

Four of the men, Mohammad Zaoli, 21, Mohammed Elnour, 18, Aru Gar, 19, and Akoak Manon, 18, appeared via video link in the Bendigo Magistrates Court yesterday. They each face 17 charges, including 14 of rape. The other three accused are aged 14, 16 and 17 and cannot be named. They appeared in a children's court on the same 17 charges.

Zaoli, Elnour, Gar and Manon were remanded in custody until Friday when they were expected to seek bail. Their co-accused were expected to apply for bail in a children's court on the same day. (Source)

It seems that it's now becoming increasingly acceptable to publicly challenge even moderate Muslims, as well as the wisdom of building a mosque at Ground Zero. Comedian Dennis Miller recently gave a speech on these issues, and he hasn't been shunned by society.

Qur'an Teacher Ashraf Miah Convicted of Molesting Girls While Teaching Them about Islam

It's sad that crimes like this occur, but at least these particular crimes happened in the West, where young girls can get justice. In Muslim countries, many young girls wouldn't say a word about such molestation, since Islam wouldn't recognize their testimony (and since some of them would be killed in honor killings if their parents found out).

Ashraf Miah, aged 38, of Joseph Street, Bow E3, was sentenced to three years and three months imprisonment at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 7 January 2010 following 13 charges of sexual assault by touching, against six girls, one as young as 4-years-old, in his care during 2005 and 2009.

The offences happened when Miah was entrusted to teach young females to read from the Koran either at his home address or at their address.

The crimes came to notice when Miah was arrested in November 2009 for offences against two of the girls. During the investigation, dealt with by detectives from the Child Abuse Investigation Team, other children that had been taught by Miah were contacted and more offences came to notice, leading to his further arrest in January 2010.

13 charges followed in April 2010 when he appeared before Thames Magistrates' Court. He was convicted on all 13 counts.

He was sentenced to three years and three months imprisonment, put on the sex offenders register for life and is not allowed to work with children.

The officer leading the investigation, Detective Sergeant Martin Bird from the Child Abuse Investigation Team, said: "The tragedy of this case is that a highly respected member of the community took advantage of their position of trust. It goes to show that even if someone thinks they have got away with it at the time, young people are brave enough to come forward and testify at court." (Source)

Muslim Policeman Shoots Five Coptic Christians in Egypt

I guess it's hard to protect the Copts, when there are so many people willing to kill them, and when some of the killers have jobs as police officers. So much for Muslims protecting Christians in Muslim lands. Meanwhile, CAIR and ISNA are complaining about Islamophobia and bigotry in America.

CAIRO – An off-duty policeman boarded a train and opened fire on Tuesday, killing a 71-year-old Christian man and wounding his wife and four others, the Interior Ministry said. The attack, less than two weeks after the suicide bombing of a church killed 21, sparked new demonstrations by enraged Christians who pelted police with stones in southern Egypt.

The church attack on worshippers leaving a New Year's Mass in the Mediterranean port of Alexandria touched off three days of riots and demonstrations by furious Christians who criticized the government for failing to protect them and vented over what they see as persistent discrimination.

All of the casualties in the latest attack were Christians — four of them women — raising concerns it will ignite a new wave of protests by a community still traumatized by the suicide bombing.

Soon after the attack, hundreds of angry Copts gathered outside the hospital where the wounded were being treated in the central Egyptian province of Minya and stoned police.

It was not immediately clear whether the gunman knew his targets were Christians. But four of the five wounded were Christian women who stand out in the conservative south as they would probably not have been wearing headscarves as most Muslim women do.

The ministry statement identified the policeman as Amer Ashour Abdel-Zaher, a 23-year-old Muslim, and said he boarded the Cairo-bound train at the town of Samalout in Minya province and opened fire on the passengers with a handgun. (Read more.)

Taboos and Fears Among Muslim Girls in Germany

As Muhammad's wife Aisha said, "I have not seen any woman suffering as much as the believing [Muslim] women" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5825).

Young Muslim women are often forced to lead double lives in Europe. They have sex in public restrooms and stuff mobile phones in their bras to hide their secret existences from strict families. They are often forbidden from visiting gynecologists or receiving sex ed. In the worst cases, they undergo hymen reconstruction surgery, have late-term abortions or even commit suicide.

Gülay has heard it from her mother so many times: An unmarried woman who has lost her virginity might as well be a whore.

Gülay, 22, lives in Berlin's Neukölln, a district that is home to a high number of Muslim immigrants, and has little in common with the cliché of the "girl with the headscarf." She wears tight jeans, low-cut blouses and has long hair that she doesn't keep covered. She is self-confident and looks people in the eye. Gülay plans to begin a training program to work as an airport ground hostess next year. At first glance, she comes across as a poster child for successful integration.

Nevertheless, she is adamantly opposed to seeing her name in print, just as she would never meet a journalist for an interview in one of the hookah bars in her neighborhood that are so popular among Arab and Turkish immigrants. She is worried that someone could overhear her talking about her family's strict morals, and about the rigid code of honor in her social environment that prevents girls from having sex before marriage and forbids them from having boyfriends.

Gülay is thinking about how best to sum up her dilemma. She nervously stirs her tea before launching into a litany of complaints. "The boys can screw around as much as they want, but if a girl does it she can expect to be shot," she says. "That's just sick." She first had sex five years ago, and it completely changed her life. Since then, she has been deathly afraid of being branded by her family as a dishonorable girl -- or, worst yet, punished and cast out. . . .

Sex education in school is also taboo for many young Muslim girls, says Gülay, who was the only one of 15 Muslim girls in her grade who attended the classes. Her fellow female students from the most devout families, says Gülay, "asked me all kinds of questions about how to use a condom and how to get the pill. Some of them didn't know anything at all." And some, according to Gülay, believed that all they had to do after having sex was to rinse themselves thoroughly with water. Others, especially "headscarf girls," only engage in anal sex with their boyfriends, believing that in this way they can protect their "honor," says Gülay.

Taking a boy home would almost be suicidal, say the girls at the youth club. The thought alone is so unheard-of that it triggers hysterical laughter. They rattle off the places where they have their rendezvous: hallways, park benches or the public restroom on Boddin Square in Neukölln, where person can get 20 minutes of privacy for 50 cents. Some girls are lucky enough to have a boyfriend with his own car or who can at least afford to pay €20 ($27) for a hotel room. (Read more.)

Muslims Protect Copts During Christmas Mass

I've got some good news and some bad news. First, the good news. While it's rare to have any encouraging reports regarding the treatment of Christians in Muslim lands, there's been a positive development in Egypt. After the recent New Year's bombing of a Coptic church, some of the country's Muslims vowed to protect the Copts during their Christmas Mass. True to their word, thousands of Muslims protected Coptic churches on Christmas Eve.

Egypt’s majority Muslim population stuck to its word Thursday night. What had been a promise of solidarity to the weary Coptic community, was honoured, when thousands of Muslims showed up at Coptic Christmas eve mass services in churches around the country and at candle light vigils held outside.

From the well-known to the unknown, Muslims had offered their bodies as “human shields” for last night’s mass, making a pledge to collectively fight the threat of Islamic militants and towards an Egypt free from sectarian strife.

“We either live together, or we die together,” was the sloganeering genius of Mohamed El-Sawy, a Muslim arts tycoon whose cultural centre distributed flyers at churches in Cairo Thursday night, and who has been credited with first floating the “human shield” idea.

Among those shields were movie stars Adel Imam and Yousra, popular preacher Amr Khaled, the two sons of President Hosni Mubarak, and thousands of citizens who have said they consider the attack one on Egypt as a whole.

“This is not about us and them,” said Dalia Mustafa, a student who attended mass at Virgin Mary Church on Maraashly. “We are one. This was an attack on Egypt as a whole, and I am standing with the Copts because the only way things will change in this country is if we come together.” (Read more.)

Now for the bad news. According to the Qur'an, Muslims are commanded to fight unbelievers, and Muslims who side with Christians are to be treated as Christians.

Qur’an 5:51—O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.

Qur’an 9:123—O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness; and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).

Qur’an 47:35—Be not weary and fainthearted, crying for peace, when ye should be uppermost: for Allah is with you, and will never put you in loss for your (good) deeds.

Qur’an 48:29—Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are severe against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves.

Hence, the Muslims who are siding with the Copts will now be targeted by Muslim terrorists. If they continue to defend the Copts, they will rightly earn the world's respect. But I wonder if they will continue defending Christians when the bombs and bullets start flying in their direction. Time will tell.

U.K. Muslim Youth Leader Saifour Rahman Convicted of Stabbing Gang Rival in the Eye with Machete

Hmmm. Now where could these young Muslims have gotten the idea that disagreements are to be settled through violence? Let's see. According to Muhammad, (1) if someone doesn't accept Islam, you fight him, (2) if someone leaves Islam, you execute him, (3) if someone steals, you hack of a body part, (4) if a wife is disobedient, you beat her into submission, and (5) if people are guilty of sexual sin, you either give them lashes or stone them to death. It seems that, in Islam, violence is the solution for practically everything.

A youth worker who lived a double life as a ruthless gang leader was jailed indefinitely today for blinding a man by hacking a machete through his eyeball.

Saifour Rahman, 23, appeared to be a pillar of the community, giving up his free time to volunteer at an outreach project for youngsters.

But beneath this veneer of respectability, Rahman headed an east London gang known as the Timber Wharf Boys and went by the street name of 'Jackal'.

As the head of a mob of 20 armed with baseball bats and sticks, machete-wielding Rahman meted out a wicked attack on Razaull Ahmed, 22, on the Isle of Dogs. . . .

'A large group of Asian males with scarves wrapped around their faces and with weapons came running towards them down Westferry Road,' said prosecutor Jonathan Foy.

'Estimates to how many there were in the group vary but it is somewhere between seven and 20.'

Foy told the court that Saifour Rahman was at the front of the pack with a large machete in his hand, and the gang ran towards Mr Ahmed and his two companions.

They then set upon him with their weapons: baseball bats, poles and pieces of wood.

'In an act of shocking savagery, Mr Saifour Rahman slashed Mr Ahmed's face,' said Foy.

'It was a wicked and deliberate blow. The blow of the machete bit deep into his nose and cut straight through his left eye.

Razaull underwent surgery at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, east London, but doctors were unable to save his eye.

The court heard Rahman regularly volunteered with the Docklands Outreach charity - a support service for young people in Tower Hamlets.

Rahman had also worked with youngsters at the Island House Community Centre on the Isle of Dogs.

Co-accused Emad Ahmed, 22, Sofiul Bosor, also 22, and Sahab Ali, 27, were all said to have been members of the armed mob but were all cleared. (Read more.)

Saudi Woman Sentenced to 100 Lashes and a Year in Jail for Being Gang Raped

According to the Qur'an (24:4), a person can only be accused of sexual sin if there are four witnesses. (Of course, 24:6 allows a husband to count as all four witnesses if he wants to accuse his wife of adultery.) The results of Sharia have been disastrous. If a man rapes a woman, and there aren't four witnesses standing around watching, the woman cannot accuse the man. Indeed, if she accuses a man, but can't produce four witnesses, she will be flogged with 80 lashes. (In some areas, a woman will be murdered in an "honor killing" simply for being raped.) Hence, women who are raped in the Muslim world know that it is useless to report the rape. But some of these raped women become pregnant, at which point they are accused of fornication or adultery. Since women cannot, according to Sharia, prove that they have been raped, the rapists go free, and the women are punished.

JEDDAH – A 23-year-old unmarried woman was awarded a one-year prison term and 100 lashes for committing adultery and trying to abort the resultant fetus.

The District Court in Jeddah pronounced the verdict on Saturday after the girl confessed that she had forced sexual intercourse with a man who had offered her a ride. The man, the girl confessed, took her to a rest house, east of Jeddah, where he and four friends assaulted her all night long.

The girl claimed that she became pregnant soon after and went to King Fahd Hospital for Armed Forces in an attempt to carry out an abortion. She was eight weeks’ pregnant then, the hospital confirmed.

According to the ruling, the woman will be sent to a jail outside Jeddah to spend her time and will be lashed after delivery of her baby who will take the mother’s last name. (Source)

British Muslim Abu Mounisa on Destroying Democracy and Replacing It with Islam

Before he ascended to office, President Obama was obviously convinced that Muslims just want a little respect. If we simply praise Islam, bow to Muslim leaders, and tell the world, again and again, that Muslims are peaceful, the jihadists will drop their bombs and rush to hug the unbelievers.

What Obama (and most Western leaders and media representatives) fails to grasp is that the origin of jihad lies not with Western actions in the Muslim world, but with the teachings of Muhammad. Hence, the West can never stop jihad by changing our policies in the Middle East, while simultaneously praising the system that gives rise to jihad.

Notice that Muslims understand this. In the following video, British Muslim Abu Mounisa tells Muslims that they cannot merely deal with the branches; they must go to the root of the problem--freedom and democracy. Mounisa is absolutely correct when he says that in order to overcome non-Islamic practices, Muslims would have to deal with the ideologies that support those practices. But the reverse is true as well. In order to overcome jihad (and wife-beating, killing apostates, sex with prepubescent girls, etc.), we must confront the ideology that gives rise to Islam. Unfortunately for our leaders who wish to submit to Islam, the ideology that needs to be confronted is Islam itself.

Qur'an Burner Jesse Quinn Harrison Arrested for Hate Crime against Muslims

It seems that the anti-Muslim backlash that we've been hearing about constantly for the last decade has finally begun. Or has it? A young man named Jesse Quinn Harrison has been charged with a hate crime for "sending an intimidating letter" to an Islamic school and "posting a video" of a Qur'an desecration. Since we know that police sometimes go out of their way to protect Islam, we'll have to see where the evidence goes. I read some comments by Harrison on Facebook and YouTube, and he doesn't sound entirely competent, so it wouldn't surprise me to learn that he threatened Muslims. If he did threaten people, I hope he is prosecuted for doing so. However, there's nothing in his video that isn't protected by the First Amendment, so if his letter is more of the same, it seems Tulsa Police have overstepped their bounds.

A Tulsa man is charged with a hate crime for allegedly sending an intimidating letter to the Islamic Peace Academy and posting a video online showing him desecrating a Quran, court records show.

Jesse Quinn Harrison, 33, was charged Tuesday with one count each of transmitting a threatening letter and malicious intimidation or harassment - what Oklahoma statutes call a hate crime.

According to the charges, Harrison is accused of sending a nine-page letter to the Islamic Peace Academy in Tulsa "with the intent to intimidate."

He also made a video that shows him "smearing pork on the Quran and an Islamic religious figure and grilling those items," according to the charge.

The charge states that the video was made to "produce violence directed to others because of their religious beliefs."

A man with the same name and Tulsa address as those listed on the charges posted on Facebook a YouTube video that matches the one described in the charges.

The 5 1/2-minute video, posted to YouTube on Oct. 1, is attributed there to a "Rockwell Porter" - a name the charges list as an alias for Harrison. (Read more.)

Harrison's letter hasn't been released yet by the Prosecuting Attorney's Office. However, his video is available on YouTube:



Yes, the video is meant to be offensive. But being offensive is not against the law. Thus, any evidence of a crime will have to come from Harrison's letter. We'll see what further investigation brings to light.

U.K. Police Being Accused of Covering Up Pattern of Muslim Men Coercing Young Non-Muslim Girls into Prostitution

Since it would be racist and bigoted to report the fact that so many Pakistani men are involved in the sex trade, it's best to keep everything a secret. (Reminds me of Dearborn Police keeping people in the dark about honor killings.)

Police and social services have been accused of fuelling a culture of silence which has allowed hundreds of young white girls to be exploited by Asian men for sex.

Agencies have identified a long-term pattern of offending by gangs of men, predominantly from the British Pakistani community, who have befriended and abused hundreds of vulnerable girls aged 11 to 16.

Experts claim the statistics represent a mere fraction of a 'tidal wave' of offending in counties across the Midlands and the north of England which has been going on for more than a decade.

A senior officer at West Mercia police has called for an end to the 'damaging taboo' connecting on-street grooming with race.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Edwards said: 'These girls are being passed around and used as meat.

'To stop this type of crime you need to start everyone talking about it but everyone's been too scared to address the ethnicity factor.

'No one wants to stand up and say that Pakistani guys in some parts of the country are recruiting young white girls and passing them around their relatives for sex, but we need to stop being worried about the racial complication.'

In a briefing paper, researchers at University College London's Jill Dando Institute of Security and Crime Science concurred that victims were typically white girls while 'most central offenders are Pakistani'.

The offenders were not viewed as paedophiles but had picked the girls 'because of their malleability'.

The report concluded that 'race is a delicate issue' that should be 'handled sensitively but not brushed under the carpet'.

The grooming usually begins with older groups of men befriending girls aged from 11 to 16 they meet on the street.

In a typical scenario, the victim is initially treated as a girlfriend and showered with presents and attention.

But the relationship quickly becomes more sinister as the abuser plies the child with drink and drugs before effectively pimping her out to friends and associates.

The worst cases involve young girls being moved around the country to be repeatedly abused.

Charities and agencies working in conjunction with the police to help victims of sexual abuse in such cases have publicly denied there is a link between ethnicity and the on-street grooming of young girls by gangs and pimps.

But researchers identified 17 court prosecutions since 1997, 14 of them in the past three years, involving the on-street grooming of girls aged 11 to 16 by groups of men.

The victims came from 13 towns and cities and in each case two or more men were convicted of offences.

In total, 56 people, with an average age of 28, were found guilty of crimes including rape, child abduction, indecent assault and sex with a child.

Three of the 56 were white, 53 were Asian. Of those, 50 were Muslim and a majority were members of the British Pakistani community. (Read more.)

LAHORE, Pakistan—Lawyers showered the suspected killer of a prominent Pakistani governor with rose petals when he arrived at court Wednesday and an influential Muslim scholars group praised the assassination of the outspoken opponent of laws that order death for those who insult Islam.

Punjab. Gov. Salman Taseer's killing has sent tremors through the ranks of Pakistan's already embattled progressives and rights activists. Thousands gathered to mourn the politician at his funeral in the city of Lahore.

Taseer was shot dead Tuesday, allegedly at the hands of one of the men assigned to protect him — police commando Mumtaz Qadri, 26, who police say confessed to killing Taseer because of the politician's opposition to strict blasphemy laws.

As Qadri made his first appearance in an Islamabad court, where a judge remanded him in custody, the hero's welcome he received illustrated Pakistan's growing identity crisis as fundamentalist Islam has spread here over the years, forcing even secular political parties to curry favor with the religious right.

A rowdy crowd slapped Qadri on the back and kissed his cheek as he was escorted inside the court. Lawyers not involved in his case tossed rose petals, while hundreds of sympathizers chanted slogans in his favor and one gave him a flower necklace.

More than 500 clerics and scholars from the group Jamat Ahle Sunnat said no one should pray or express regret for the killing. The group representing Pakistan's majority Barelvi sect, which follows a brand of Islam considered moderate, also issued a veiled threat to other opponents of the blasphemy laws.

"The supporter is as equally guilty as one who committed blasphemy," the group warned in a statement, adding politicians, the media and others should learn "a lesson from the exemplary death." (Read more.)
