Egypt’s majority Muslim population stuck to its word Thursday night. What had been a promise of solidarity to the weary Coptic community, was honoured, when thousands of Muslims showed up at Coptic Christmas eve mass services in churches around the country and at candle light vigils held outside.
From the well-known to the unknown, Muslims had offered their bodies as “human shields” for last night’s mass, making a pledge to collectively fight the threat of Islamic militants and towards an Egypt free from sectarian strife.
“We either live together, or we die together,” was the sloganeering genius of Mohamed El-Sawy, a Muslim arts tycoon whose cultural centre distributed flyers at churches in Cairo Thursday night, and who has been credited with first floating the “human shield” idea.
Among those shields were movie stars Adel Imam and Yousra, popular preacher Amr Khaled, the two sons of President Hosni Mubarak, and thousands of citizens who have said they consider the attack one on Egypt as a whole.
“This is not about us and them,” said Dalia Mustafa, a student who attended mass at Virgin Mary Church on Maraashly. “We are one. This was an attack on Egypt as a whole, and I am standing with the Copts because the only way things will change in this country is if we come together.” (Read more.)
Now for the bad news. According to the Qur'an, Muslims are commanded to fight unbelievers, and Muslims who side with Christians are to be treated as Christians.
Qur’an 5:51—O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.
Qur’an 9:123—O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness; and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).
Qur’an 47:35—Be not weary and fainthearted, crying for peace, when ye should be uppermost: for Allah is with you, and will never put you in loss for your (good) deeds.
Qur’an 48:29—Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are severe against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves.
Hence, the Muslims who are siding with the Copts will now be targeted by Muslim terrorists. If they continue to defend the Copts, they will rightly earn the world's respect. But I wonder if they will continue defending Christians when the bombs and bullets start flying in their direction. Time will tell.

That is a good article and is very encouraging at this time. I don't want to destroy the positive aspect of it, but I too wonder how long this will last. Will it become a common thing to do for Muslims in Egypt?
The support is not by ordinary Muslims. It is organized by the political elite that included two sons of Mr. Mubarak. It is the political elite that is responsible for revival of Islam by using it as a tool to subjugate masses creating an environment that regresses to unproductiveness, poverty and lawlessness. Violent and frenzied environment will be created by the Mullahs who eke out their living by literally brainwashing religiously devout to insane levels by drilling the teachings of Koran. Besides, there will be politically patronized benefit that constantly flows to Mullahs and religious groups so that they are part of the elite and desist from engineering violent political rebellion. At present there is an out of phase state between these groups and the ruling elite in Egypt. The result is that the fanatic groups are trying to seize political power. Systematically going after the helpless Copts is just an age old Mohammad's type of organizing a killer army ready to execute the coup. The fanatics are not in a position to engineer political protests and killing Copts is the religious way of achieving either heavy concessions or ultimate political power itself. As correctly reported, support to Copts or any retaliation against this terrorist groups will be used as a pretext to keep alive violence till a theocratic State of Egypt is accomplished.
The Muslim elite organizing support to Copts is not only good news but also the only way left for them to save themselves and to save Egypt from self destruction. A united effort by the political elite of Muslim world, where they reduce their dependence on Islam as a political tool and take steps to cut-off funding routs to fanatics, is the only way to save Islamic countries. Left to the ways of insane devout, they will not rest till all Islamic countries are destroyed either by waging war against each other (Islamic purity settling business) or against unbelievers (Islam’s routine and regular business). There are no easy ways to deal with a religio-political tool that grants everything like a genie for rulers as long as they are willing to go by its dangerous ideology. Since, it is criminal and immoral; it will lead to eventual destruction one day or the other. May we hope that the political elite of Islamic world recognizes this truth, stop abusing Islam and act united to save humanity from the menace that is clearly out of control?

The Muslims were not protecting the Copts.
The only reason they provided this "protection" was to keep the enemy close enough to cut his throat some time in the future.
Obviously, no terror attack was planned.
And yes, I think the Muslim community would have known about one.

Well, yes and no.
Isaiah 19:19 In the heart of Egypt an altar will be set up for the LORD; at its border a shrine will be built to honor him. 20 These will remind the Egyptians that the LORD All-Powerful is with them. And when they are in trouble and ask for help, he will send someone to rescue them from their enemies. 21 The LORD will show the Egyptians who he is, and they will know and worship the LORD. They will bring him sacrifices and offerings, and they will keep their promises to him. 22 After the LORD has punished Egypt, the people will turn to him. Then he will answer their prayers, and the Egyptians will be healed.
23 At that time a good road will run from Egypt to Assyria. The Egyptians and the Assyrians will travel back and forth from Egypt to Assyria, and they will worship together. 24 Israel will join with these two countries. Wow Muslims protecting Christians from MUSLIMS. Anyone else see a problem with this?
