Shadid Lewis vs. Tony Costa: Is the Quran the Word of God or of Man?

More than 1.6 billion Muslims are convinced that the Qur'an is the Word of Allah. But what evidence can they offer to show that it's the Word of Allah? In this debate, Shadid Lewis argues that the Qur'an is the Word of Allah, while Tony Costa argues that it is the word of man.

The UNHOLY koran ( qu'ran ) was created by satan ( the devil ) and muslims!!

The UNHOLY koran ( qu'ran ) and their STRUGGLE ( Jihad, islam ) is the same as STRUGGLE ( Mein Kampf, NAZI Germany ) both are TWIN IDEOLOGIES OF HATE FOR JEWS AND CHRISTIANS!!

The UNHOLY koran ( qu'ran ) teaches HATE / NAZISM / COMMUNISM / FASCISM / MARXISM / RACISM / RAPISTS / TERRORISM / TOTALITARIANISM / and HATE for JEWS AND CHRISTIANS!!

The FALSE PAGANISM OCCULT-IDEOLOGY of islam is NOT a religion PERIOD!! The FALSE prophet muhammad is NOT a prophet!! The FALSE PAGAN moon god allah-satan is NOT a god, it is just one of over 350 FALSE PAGANISM OCCULT-IDEOLOGY gods that came out of the middle east, Arab nations!!

The FALSE PAGAN moon god allah-satan is NOT the same as our True GOD who art in HEAVEN!!

Our True GOD who art in HEAVEN gave us these descends of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!!

The HOLY BIBLE is Inspired by our True GOD who art in HEAVEN to the real Prophets of the LIVING WORD of GOD our FATHER who art in HEAVEN!!

Because of the HEBREW TEXTS ( SCROLLS ) we have JUDAISM and CHRISTIANITY!! So, only JUDAISM and CHRISTIANITY is RIGHT as we have the same GOD who art in HEAVEN!!

YESHUA-JESUS CHRIST is KING of kings, LORD ( ADONAI ) of lords, HE is the ALPHA and OMEGA, the FIRST and the LAST, HE is the BEGINNING and the END, HALLELUJAH!!

YESHUA-JESUS CHRIST is the WAY the TRUTH and the LIFE, NO one comes unto the FATHER, but through ME ( YESHUA-JESUS CHRIST )!! Thus: YESHUA-JESUS CHRIST is the only WAY to enter into HEAVEN!!

Love Always and Shalom Everyone, YSIC \o/

Thumbs up to Dr. Douglas Costa. He really represented Christianity well and did justice to that topic. We thank God for the grace he bestow on him.

Shadid Lewis

Allah alone can explain what a verse or chapter mean.

How does Allah clarify a difficult verse when Allah is unknowable?

Shadid need to understand that the case of Jonah is different from Muhammad. Jonah knew God sent him to Nineveh but instead of going to where God sent him he went another direction completely different from what God sent him.

Jonah knew it was God who spoke to him. Muhammad was not sure who spoke to him maybe Allah or Satan until Khadijah convinced him it was Allah.

Another thing here is that Jonah didn't plan committing suicide for his own error. But he was willing to sacrifice himself for the life of many who are innocent of the problem he should be facing. He knew the only remedy to sav those people is for him not to be on that ship again.

Spelling error do not count if the Quran is from God or not.

If spelling error is not a criteria for the Quran. Why did Uthman order that the other manuscripts should be burnt? Why did he codified the Quran if it does not matter?

Everybody are born good

The guy truly did not understand what a broken world means. It's not all about war. The guy should come to Africa and see how broken people are even though you still see them with a smile. A boy who can't afford to. Eat thrice a day has his world broken. A girl whose parents can't send to school has her world broken. Even I typing has one part of my life broken that I need Jesus to amend.

How can people whose heart is evil be good?
Jeremiah 17:9,
Lewis has forgotten that this is one of muslim argument against Christians calling Jesus God. Matthew 19:17 Mark 10:18, Luke 18:19.

If you believe only God is good, why do you accept the fact that the Quran called you good people? Are you also God since you are good?

He keeps on mentioning about people converting to Islam in troop/Multitude and so on.

Is shadid aware of what the Bible teaches about Satan idea to dominate the world?

Islam idea to dominate the world
Muslim do not understand the ideology in Islam.

Islam came to dominate the world (Quran 9:33).

Satan owe the dominance of the world

> Matthew 4:8-9 - Satan promise to give Jesus the dominance of this word.

> John 14:30 - Jesus called the Satan prince of this "world"

> 2 Corinthians 4:4 - Satan is called the lord of this world.

Jesus's kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36)

Shadid I pray that the Lord Jesus Christ help you understand that Christianity is not about dominating this world. Our world is with Jesus in Heaven. #Shalom

Invalidity of Mr Shadid's main argument

Mr Shadid's main argument commits the fallacy of denying the antecedent and is therefore invalid.

Mr Shadid's main argument can be expressed as:
Premise 1: If something spoken in the name of God does not come true, then it was not revealed by God
Premise 2: What Surah 110 speaks in the name of God has come true
Conclusion: The Quran is from God

This argument commits the fallacy of denying the antecedent and therefore it is invalid. To see this more clearly, consider the following example:
Premise 1: If there are no clouds, there is no rain
Premise 2: There are clouds
Conclusion: There is rain
Mr Shadid's argument uses this form of reasoning (plus a generalisation; see below). It is obvious that in this example the conclusion is false, since we can have clouds without rain. Similarly, in Mr Shadid's argument, it is possible for someone to speak something that is true without it being a revelation from God. Therefore, even if surah 110 has turned out to be true, it does not mean that it is from God.

Further, Mr Shadid's argument generalises the (invalid) conclusion about surah 110 to the whole of the Quran by making the implicit assumption that whatever is true for surah 110 is true for the whole of the Quran.

Finally, I would like to thank both debaters for the interesting debate.

I saw this comment on the YT page and I thought it was simple and so valid:

"Christ Witness 1 week ago (edited)
I will destroy Shadid's main argument in 1 paragraph. This argument doesn't follow logic. The bible doesn't say that anything that come to pass is from God.
For example, I foresaw something and it came to pass, does it mean i am a prophet of God ?
Because Satan himself can prophetize something and it will be true. In fact that verse means if we find any prophecy that did not come to pass, it means it is not from God. Not that anything that came to pass is from God. Also the bible said that the whole earth will worship the devil except those whose name are not in the book of the lamp (the Christians).

Rev 13:8 (All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the Lamb's book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world)."

Regarding the hadith that says that the world is atop of a whale. Shadid says that he doesn't accept any hadith (about something that mohamed said) that is contradicted by the qur'an. But since that hadith is not contradicted by anything in the qur'an, Shadid has to accept it. The reality is tha he doesn't accept it because it doesn't make sense scientifically.

Then he didn't adress errors in the quran proper. According to the qur'an there are seven heavens and the stars hang from the lowest heaven like lamps. This makes sense if written by a 7th century Arab but not if written by God.

The same goes for the meteorite shooting stars being missiles to keep the shaitans from entering the heavenly assembly to listen in. Makes sense if written by a man, does not make sense if written by God.

I blieve Tony Costa made a small mistake that doesn't take away from his argument

Persia was not Christian when invaded by muslims but zoriastrian, from what I understand.

Hi Nacanacazo. Acts 2:9 points out that there were Parthians in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost. They would have returned to Persia (Iran) with the Gospel message. While Zoroastrianism was the dominant religion of Persia, there were definitely Christians there prior to the advent of Islam. For more information on Christianity in Persia see http://

It's interesting that Mr. Shadid focused on one argument, refusing to respond to Dr. Costa's numerous proofs that the Quran was composed by Muhammad. It is telling how Shadid felt he had to focus on such a weak argument:

1) Muhammad saying that multitudes would join Islam isn't the same as saying that third of the world will be Muslim. If Muhammad would have said that, it would have been a prediction worth mentioning (e.g., if I predict that a team will be "good next season" and then they go unbeaten I can't claim that I predicted their unbeaten season).

2) It is a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Muslims themselves wanted to prove to themselves that he is a prophet so they made it their business to spread Islam.

3) Muhammad had so many false prophecies.

4) The verse stating that multitudes would join Islam could very well have been written AFTER many people had joined Muhammad.

That is Shadid's smoking gun. Sura 110: 2 " And you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes, "

What did one expect someone, who believed God's angel was actually talking
to them, and they were propagating the true religion to say?
Of course he expected there would be multitudes joining his religion.

Although perhaps true, Islam maybe the fastest growing religion today.
That verse does not make that claim.
It simply says multitudes will be entering the religion of Allah.
O.k.?
Well, multitudes did follow Muhammad during his lifetime.
Prediction fulfilled fourteen hundred years ago.
Whoopeee, in the mean time, Christianity became the largest and
fastest growing religion since then.
Would he concede Christianity is true, lol?
So that argument is simply a non sequitur, and should be tossed.

Whether Islam is today's fastest growing religion is a whole other
topic, and certainly not predicted in that
particular verse.

Why certain religions growth rate is higher than others has many
different variables.
Could be change in beliefs, secondary conversion, deathbed conversion,
conversion for convenience and marital conversion, and forced conversion
such as conversion by violence or charity, birthrate, social factors, etc,,,
Certainly has nothing to do with divine providence.
According to Shadid's religion, billions of individuals are coming
to believe in all sorts of religions and non-religion, that are false and
not " Allah's religion ".
Which makes up a much larger group than Islam.

Get a grip Shadid.

Mr. Costa - So much good information!

You presented the information wonderfully, Shadid had no choice (like all muslim debaters) but to ignore the points he couldn't argue against instead of addressing them. His logic of "If it comes to pass its from God" is so terrible that its both laughable and sad at the same time...

He danced around the violent spread of islam like a ballerina.

He always goes back to "America's 300 year spread of democracy is evil, Islams 1400 history of violent growth is not" argument...its pathetic.

It amazes me how muslims will argue about the textual differences in bible without even knowing of the ones in the quran, are huge doctrinal problems for them. e.g. The bearer of sins problem, and like you mentioned the 7 vs 8 days of creation. The muslims I deal with tell me the bible is corrupt because Solomon had 70,000 calfs in one verse vs 700,000 calfs in another, and want to claim victory "See I told you the bible is corrupted!!!" Smh. Its such a weak position to hold.

But thanks for doing this in such an informative and loving manner. Well done!

This muslim thug is laughable. He says Qur'an is an ultimate authority in Islam. When his opponent tells him that 5 times a day prayers isn't commanded in the Quran but in the hadith and that Qur'an only tells 3X a day, he obfuscates it by just saying it's in the Quran but could not cite that verse. Notice how quick he is to show the verse when such exists in that death manual called Quran!

Surah 110? Really? That is the first of only two proofs that Shadid could come up with? Although Shadid presented Surah 110 as though it were a prophecy given by Muhammad towards the beginning of his "prophetic" career, and at a time when Muslims were a tiny minority and had no palpable indications that they would be victorious over the Meccans, the fact is that it was the last Surah that Muhammad crafted before he died, it was written after the conquest of Mecca, and, as such, it is more appropriately translated as a statement of what happened and not as prediction of what was going to happen, though many translations obscure this fact. Far better than many translations of Surah 110 are the following two, both of which render the operative terms in the past tense, and the second of which even adds parenthetical remarks that tell us it is not a prophecy but the record of the fulfillment of some unnamed prophecies:

When the help of God DREW NEAR and the victory and THOU HADST SEEN humanity ENTERING into the way of life of God in units, then, glorify the praise of thy Lord and ask for His forgiveness. Truly, He had been ever The Accepter of Repentance. (S. 110:1-3, Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar)

The help of Allah and the victory (over the Makkans) HAS INDEED COME (in fulfillment of the prophecies), and YOU SEE people thronging in to the fold of the Faith of Allah. So glorify your Lord with His praises and extol His name and ask His protection. Surely, He is Oft-Returning (with grace and mercy). (S. 110:1-3, Amatul Rahman Omar)

Hence the reason Yusuf Ali, in his introduction to this verse, stated:

"This beautiful Surah was the last of the Surahs to be revealed as a whole...

The date of this Surah was only a few months before the passing away of the Holy Prophet from this world...The place was either the precincts of Makkah at his Farewell Pilgrimage, Dhu al Hijjah, A.H. 10, or Madinah after his return from the Farewell Pilgrimage."
