Dearborn Muslim Charged with Nine Counts of Attempted Murder for Trying to Kill Street Preachers Outside the Islamic Center of America

I heard about this when I was still in Michigan, but I didn't want to post anything until I had some documentation. I waited for the Detroit Free Press and other local media to report the story, but I gave up after more than a week of searching. Fortunately, Gadi Adelman (GA) interviewed Ruben Israel (RI) and posted the disturbing news over at Front Page Magazine.

On Sunday, June 17th, 2012, Ruben Israel's group of street preachers went to the Islamic Center of America (the same mosque I had visited two days earlier). While the group was preaching, a Muslim emerged from the mosque, got into his SUV, and tried to run them over. Mosque security naturally blamed the preachers for provoking him.

Everyone should take note here. Ruben Israel's presence at the Dearborn Arab Festival was national news. The media jumped at the chance to show images of intolerant Christians harassing Muslims (check out Niraj Warikoo's coverage over at the Detroit Free Press). While I have no objections to calling attention to (and criticizing) the actions of Ruben Israel and his associates, we should all be horrified to realize that nine counts of attempted murder by a Muslim targeting Christians isn't even considered newsworthy by local media in Michigan.

Here's an excerpt from Adelman's interview:

GA: Now give me the exclusive; what happened on Sunday?

RI: We were at the Arab fest on Friday. On Sunday we went to the mosque in Dearborn.

GA: Were you on mosque property or out on the side walk?

RI: What mosque doesn’t have a sidewalk, but we stood by the street where the side walk would be. Of course the Dearborn Police showed up instantly. We were able to use our megaphone. We were able to fly our banners and there was no problem. The officers said everything was fine and we’re doing good. There were 2 squad cars and they flanked us just to make sure we were safe. Some of the Muslims came out and were screaming at us and we yelled back and forth and we did not go on their property, and according to police it was fine.

Unfortunately, one of the Muslims got in his SUV, drove up over the hill, accelerated and came right at us where we were standing. This guy came directly at us and we had to jump out of the way and he came screaming by us. Both of the police cars stopped him, pulled him out and cuffed him and he showed no remorse. The police actually have it on video because both police cars had there dash cameras on, so it’s not like it’s my word against his.

Then mosque security came out and said that they knew this guy and that we provoked him and the Dearborn Police officer yelled at the security guard and told him if he didn’t back off he would also be arrested for hindering a police investigation.

GA: Did the guy in the SUV pull over or was he forced to?

RI: They had to block him in. Once he was on the street they were headed his way and he was blocked in. They threw him against the car, cuffed him, frisked him, checked his car and again. It’s not like we can make this up. He is now officially charged with 9 counts of attempted murder.

GA: This never hit the news, not even in Dearborn?

RI: No, of course not, but if I had attempted to run down a Muslim that would be the head news on CNN, CBS, NBC, but when a Muslim wants to take out 9 Christians. We were the visiting team. This guy may walk; he has the potential to walk. At the very best they may take away his library card for a few weeks, but he’s out on bail. He’s out on high-dollar bail and from what I was told by the detective in charge, he does have a high-dollar attorney, so he’s not going to go down easy. He’s going to fight this thing.

Hmmm. It seems police have video footage of the attempted murder of the group. Since the Dearborn Police Department and I aren't on the best of terms, anyone care to put in a FOIA request for the footage and police reports?

MUSLIMS CAN FACE THE EAST WHEN THEY PRAY, BUT IN THE WEST THEY HAVE TO FOLLOW THE LAW - like everyone else!!!

Just curious, even though I myself a Christian, I don't know if what they are doing is alright (i.e: Do they have the right motivation when they preach the Gospel to muslims? Do they want them to be saved or do they just want to piss them off and look for more trouble?).

Sure we have the right for free speech, but should we use it in such a way? Somehow I think that there might be a better way to FREELY PREACH the Gospel to muslims, yet with love and the right motivation.

Just because muslims respond to us the wrong way, it doesn't justify us to also respond to them the wrong way. They can do what is wrong, but we still have to keep our integrity as Christians by doing what is right (not just right by law, but also by godly and holy standard).

Addition: furthermore from the comments after the incident, I could not really see any concern (or love) from the street preacher to see muslims getting saved. What I could see is that he quickly used what had happened to simply point out the muslims' wrongdoings.

Sure it is a fair thing to show people's error, but should we just stop there? Or should we concern that they actually change? I hope those muslims do have a change of heart though (by the grace of God).

We might think that what we are doing are the right things... but it is still worth it to evaluate them once more.

Ruben Israel shouldn't be labeled a "Christian".

Clay,

You're preaching to the choir. You'll have trouble finding anyone on this blog who agrees with Ruben's approach. But that has nothing to do with the post. A man tried to kill nine people for Constitutionally protected activity, and the media completely ignores it. That's far more disturbing than the fact that some street preachers aren't very loving (which we all knew already!).

...at least I don't preach in vain for the choir still listen =)
You'll have trouble finding anyone on this blog who agrees with Ruben's approach.
...which is a good thing. Because that's not what happens outside this blog (e.g: on Facebook). There are Christians who quickly take side with Ruben Israel simply because Ruben Israel labels himself a "Christian".
That's far more disturbing
Could be... but I could not consider "being right or wrong with God" as something trivial either.

Muslims: continually filling up the measure of their religion's wickedness. Good to see.

David Wood, see the religious moderates like Clay cannot see what is more important here.

Sounds like its time to come with love and utter defiance to sharia, and to expose as much of Islam's violence to the world as possible, and as much of Islam's falsehood to the Muslims as possible. David Wood, rev up another one of your videos, lets do this thing!

I wonder why the Dearborn press did not report on this story. If anything it makes the police out to be actually doing their job.

I hope Rubin Israel and crew got some video of their almost demise.

Radical Moderate said...

Was reading the article and Rubin said that he brought the Pigs head for protection LOL what goof.

Guess he should of brought the pigs head to the Mosque lol

Stones.
They do one of three things if they strike people-- they either bounce off, injure, or kill.
I cannot see any intention behind the throwing of stones that goes before or beyond these three results.
Attempted murder?
Yes, I think so.
Malicious wounding?
That too.
But definitely WITH MALICE AFORETHOUGHT!

What nutty judge allows bail for 9 counts of attempted murder?

It would interesting to know who paid that bail. I suspect that's not the defendant's money.

Really? Why did David have to criticize Terry Jones for trying to burn the Quran back then?

Is how people see Christians important or not? How would you like people to see us? The same way they see Ruben?

I agree with both Bro David and Clay. If Bro David and party didn't have love for the Muslims they wouldn't have went to Dearborn again risking even their lives. Philippians 3:7 and 1:21. I dont think there is anything wrong with drawing Officials' attention. Bible doesn't condemn that. When you take revenge yourselves thats wrong. "Vengeance is Mine I will repay". However we musn't forget there is a war on. Ephesians 6:10-16.

I hope everyday muslims gives "testimonies" of their teaching and reported in newspaper. So those muslim who try to whitewash the teaching get sick of all these. Those like irshad manjit,or modern muslims, etc.

The proper term for someone like Ruben Israel is street screecher.

He just stands on the corner screeching at people without any coherent message or teaching.

LadySmith said...

Walter...people like you make me nauseaus. Are you not aware of God's warning against ill will toward His "little ones"....preachers of the gospel? You would do well to watch your step as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit carries an eternal death sentence which God said He would never forgive. You are lucky you haven't committed it yet (as far as I know).

I don't see Christians, Jews, Budhists, or other religions stoning people for their speach. This was founded as a Christian nation. Unfortnately, they thought all people were civilized and tolerated others...we can see what toleration of muslims does...read the Koran if you want to have nightmares about what their "god" says to do to us.

LadySmith said...

Walter...blasphemy against the Holy Spirit carries an eternal sentence in Hell...w/o a chance of forgiveness. You're getting close.

I happened to hear of the street preacher incident today when listening to AFR. I found it horrific that the group of Muslims were allowed to demonstrate violence toward this group and not be arrested or at least detained. I agree with Clay, after viewing the video I was even more horrified by the insulting nature of this street preacher. When you compare this group with the Acts17 approach in Dearborn, there is a considerable difference in the delivery of the message.

Aletheya said...

I just visited RI website 'cause I had no clue who is he lol
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm As long as they don't approach Muslims with violence, I don't condemn them a bit.
Because their way of doing things can't be ignored. Soon or later the officials will pay attention. ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS THEY SAY...WE CAN'T JUST ALLOW MUSLIMS DO WHATEVER THEY WANT TO DO...WE CAN KEEP ON TALKING ABOUT THEIR QUR'AN BUT IT'S IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO SEE THEIR ACTIONS, THAT IT'S NOT "THE EXTREMISTS" ONLY.
I don't think the police in Dearborn will arrest Christians again for preaching, that I GUARANTEE!

T.G. said...

Ruben is often unnecessarily incendiary. but that does not mean we should excuse the Muslim's behavior when they get violent.

People say hateful things about Christians all the time. Would it be okay for Christians to get angry, throw rocks and bricks, and try to run people over?

Andy said...

I don't get it. Why are people so quick to criticize Ruben Israel and his "methods" and to assert that he isn't a Christian? Have the people who make these sorts of comments stood out in public getting ridiculed, stoned, and beaten for proclaiming "Jesus Christ is King and is coming to judge the world."? (David Wood being the exception, although he isn't the one devoting the majority of his comments to criticizing Ruben Israel anyways) I personally think that Ruben and his group could show a little more love toward those they address, but I'm not going to judge their faith when I'm not putting my body in jeopardy by publicly preaching the supremacy of Christ, as they are.
