Negeen's Arrest at Dearborn Arab Festival

Here's the video footage from Negeen's camera while she was being assaulted by Dearborn Police. In any other city, in any other state, police officers would recognize her Constitutional rights. But this is Dearborn. They can accuse a Christian of anything, and violate her rights in any way they see fit.

If this doesn't make your blood boil, nothing will.

“An illegal arrest is an assault and battery. The person so attempted to be restrained of his or her liberty has the same right to use force in defending him or herself as he or she would in repelling any other assault and battery.” (State v. Robinson, 145 ME. 77, 72 ATL. 260).

“Each person has the right to resist an unlawful arrest. In such a case, the person attempting the arrest stands in the position of a wrongdoer and may be resisted by the use of force, as in self- defense.” (State v. Mobley, 240 N.C. 476, 83 S.E. 2d 100).

“One may come to the aid of another being unlawfully arrested, just as he may where one is being assaulted, molested, raped or kidnapped. Thus it is not an offense to liberate one from the unlawful custody of an officer, even though he may have submitted to such custody, without resistance.” (Adams v. State, 121 Ga. 16, 48 S.E. 910).

"Eight police officers armed with glocks to stop three Christians armed with copies of the Gospel"

Hey, I can see the cause for alarm. After all "the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow". Sounds deadly! And don't forget St. Paul's description in 2 Corinthians 10, that the weapons we use have "divine power to demolish strongholds." They should have brought tanks! :)

I am wondering HOW the Dearborn POLICE Dpt and the MAYOR will justify their actions.

It is so cool... an entire "MUSLIM CITY" being ashamed by 4 missionaries!

NOTE that the lady who appears with the police officer is the SAME ONE from last year's event. You can see her face at 4:33-34 min. I think she was the one who brought the police to Naggeen.

Notice how the officers came with a Muslim girl leading them to Nageen. Seems like this was part of the plan, sneaky Muslims.

Also notice how from time frame 5:10-15, you can see people walking by not noticing what was happening. But they call this a RIOT? Wow, if they call this a riot, I wonder what they would call a prison riot? World war 3??? These "cops" need to grow some thick skin.

I am really wondering where the Riot is...You guys really look like you are about to stand in a hot dog line or something with the level of activity around you. What I am shell shocked by is the fact that the police and the DA has seen this footage and is still trying to prosecute Nageen and you guys. Talking about grasping at nonexistent straws.

Hiwot said...

The policeman/security guard said, “there is a criminal complaint…” and Negeen asked what the criminal complaint was. Then, he said, “I will tell you…” At this moment (it seems like) instead of telling her what she did wrong, he tried to grab her and she was agitated and told him not to touch her. So what is the offense here?

Now all we have to do is wait for the great Yahya Snow to find anything in the video with which he could charge Negeen.

A few things....

First of all, I am glad you got your video footage back. Hopefully, this is a significant step in proving your innocent or guilt. As I said earlier, one way or the other I hope this situation gets resolved for you guys as soon as possible, for your own sake of mind and those of your spouses and children.

If what you claim happened to Negeen at the police station really did happen, that is unacceptable and I hope the officers responsible pay the consequences.

Regarding when the police officers approached Negeen, well, let's just say I've learned that whenever I come into contact with the police, whether it's for a traffic stop or something else, regardless of whether I think it is fair or not, I do my best to go out of my way to be as cooperative and courteous with officers of the law, because I know these people have the legal ability to make my life a living hell for even the most insignificant reason. Why didn't Negeen turn the camera off right away when she was asked? If this was unconstitutional, couldn't that have been brought up at a later time? It seems to me that this would have been better for your case. Besides, doesn't your book of holy writ tell followers of Christ to submit to those in authority (Romans 13)?

I'm not saying this to be a troll. This is an honest concern I have. I am open to being corrected if I am mistaken.

David's comment about it taking 8 police officers to deal with 3 Christians peacefully distributing literature somehow got me thinking about lightbulb jokes.

Q: How many Dearborn police officers does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Nine. One to change the bulb for the Muslim whose lamp it was and eight to arrest the Christians nearby and accuse them of the bulb's blowout.

Q: How many Dearborn mayors does it take to change a light bulb?
A: None. The Dearborn mayor prefers darkness to light.

Anonymous said...

Another concern I have is this. How come you guys are so eager to use this young 18 year old girl, who is a fresh convert from Islam, for your evangelistic purposes?

If the circumstances were reversed and the muslims were using an 18 year old girl who just converted to Islam from Christianity for their evangelistic purposes, wouldn't you be tempted to call that exploitation?

This is just my observation. I look forward to your response.

Oh, and I do realize that I need to take into consideration that the Negeen is only 18, and she may not have learned the lessons an old fart like me has come to learn about how one should deal with the police. She appears to be a bright young girl with great future ahead, and because of that, I do hope the charges are dropped, or they are at least expunged from her record sooner than later. I wouldn't want this incident to affect her down the road when she applies for jobs, graduate school etc.

Lydia McGrew said...

Footage obviously refutes the claims made by the police.

Moreover: A number of people have said that you "should have" filmed from a distance and discreetly. That's obviously what Negeen was doing. Honestly, at the beginning I can't even see where David and Nabeel are in the footage. She's filming discreetly and from behind the tent to such an extent that you couldn't tell that she was even connected with you guys unless you already knew it. She was _sought out_ and harassed, told to turn off her camera, simply because of her association with David and Nabeel which was discovered separately. Had she been a reporter or someone unassociated with David and Nabeel, the officer would never have approached her in the first place. Apparently the real "criminal complaint" was "being friends with those Acts 17 guys and filming with the intent of helping them out in some way."

Mike said: "Another concern I have is this. How come you guys are so eager to use this young 18 year old girl, who is a fresh convert from Islam, for your evangelistic purposes?"

Negeen was holding a camera, and we told her not to come near us. How is this using her for our purposes (unless you're prepared to argue that video recording is too much for recent converts)? We had no clue that the Dearborn PD would be so desperate that they would come after her.

Glenn Hendrickson said...

Wow, this was a bummer to wake up to... but at least you guys got the video back and the footage vindicates what you've been saying since it was confiscated. I applaud you all for not giving up or caving to the pressure. Those policemen abused their authority as did the police chief and the mayor of Dearborn. They are the criminals, not you folks!

Lydia McGrew said...

I haven't listened to it again, but someone else here in the house who watched the video says he hears a voice early on (could be the police officer) saying, "Where's what's her name?" This could be their search for Negeen.

Notice that the police report claims that Negeen was going to be escorted away for her safety and that she resisted this. But notice that the policeman does _not_ tell her, "Ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you to leave for your safety, because the crowd is becoming dangerous." Of course, he couldn't have, because there was no crowd around her. That's all a lie. But the point I'm making is that he made no _attempt_ to explain to her any sort of safety situation. Instead, he told her simply that she had to stop recording and that there was a "criminal complaint," presumably against her, but doesn't tell her what it is. This is not the action of a policeman noticing that she is in danger and asking her to leave the festival area with him for her safety. Moreover, she could have gone on recording if that were the case. No reason not to videotape heroic policemen rescuing Christian missionaries from a dangerous crowd!

Looking forward to the rest of the video.

Submitting to those in authority doesn't mean you have to roll over and let them do whatever they want to you.

Lydia McGrew said...

Mike, you keep talking about waiting for evidence to prove "innocence or guilt." Yet here is some evidence. They read the police report and showed the footage, and it was obvious that the police report is lying. It is lying about facts--there was no crowd gathering around Negeen. She was not "inciting" a crowd. Her "yelling" was yelling, "Don't touch me" in fear to one policeman. There was no imminent riot. The police report is lying to make it look like the police were just trying to protect her from a rioting crowd and she didn't cooperate. The footage shows that this is not true.

Yet instead of saying, "Gee, she wasn't doing anything illegal. That was a terrible miscarriage of justice that she was arrested," you start talking about _strategy_ and so forth and criticizing David and Nabeel for even having Negeen taking video from a distance. Suddenly the focus has shifted off of the concrete question of, you know, whether the people who were arrested were guilty of breaking any law to a bunch of other issues. Why is that, if your whole concern is merely to remain "neutral" and then to acknowledge actual evidence of innocence or guilt in lawbreaking?

I'm afraid that this does make you look a bit trollish, at least in my eyes.

Dear sister and brothers;
Whole story looks like to be happening in a muslim country where police can be paid to do all the dirty you want against your enemies. I don’t want to believe but did the muslims pay money to these officers to do these acts otherwise why would they act against the Constitutional rights of our sister and brothers.
It was and still is shameful on part of the Dearborn police who are stubborn and arrogant enough not to apologize for their shameful behavior.
Praise God that all of you are safe and blessed to suffer in the name of Jesus.
As i always say where ever muslims go troubles follow and surely this is one of those, where they subdued the police to misbehave against the Gospel work of Jesus.
The Dearborn police chief should remember that no one in this world or outside this world can stop the good news of Jesus Christ.
I pray that God may strengthen you and us all in keeping moving towards the Prize that we have in Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.

God bless you all

You know, after how she was then treated at the police station for her own personal safety I can see how she needed to keep that camera rolling as long as long as possible and make as much commotion as possible (while not resisting) so that she would be less likely to be assaulted (feminine defense class 101).

I did not catch that the first time around thank you Lydia for pointing out---the inconsistency of the police report "needed to move for her safety" to the video "a criminal complaint." Their extremely weak "criminal complaint" of refusal to obey an officer obviously did not exist until they put their hands on her. Let them say what the alleged original criminal complaint was and when it happened...not likely to happen.

mkvine said...

Mike,

I don't think it would of made a difference if Nageen did or didn't turn off her camera. Remember, before they even asked her to turn off the camera, she already had a criminal complaint against her, and was going off to jail anyway.

Anonymous said...

Lydia, I really don't care if you think I'm being a troll. Trust me. It won't ruin my day. I never accused Negeen of doing anything illegal. But I truly was concerned that she didn't cooperate with the police right away. If you're too sensitive that you can't handle possible objections and concerns to your cause, then you're too sensitive.

The Dearborn Mayor, Chief and officers, must also understand that when police officers or government officials break the law they no longer hold any authority what so ever. In the instant they act outside the law and under color of authority or jurisdiction, a citizen has the right and duty to resist.

16, 48 S.E. 910).

Read the premise and the extent of it upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States in the case: John Bad Elk v. U.S., 177 U.S. 529.

Have you guys thought about using a discreet recording device and streaming it to the internet in real time (or at least transmit the video to somewhere where the police could not confiscate it)? This way it would be unlikely that the police would notice the camera and tell you to turn it off. Also, even if they confiscated your camera the video would already be on the internet/still in your possession. I'm not sure how difficult it would be to do this, but thought I would mention it.

Edwardtbabinski said...

Hi David, Mary Jo (whom I've had the pleasure of meeting on facebook), and Christian friends, I'm an agnostic with questions.

I'm all for the Civil Rights of the Dearborn 4. In fact, so is the Muslim attorney in that town who is running for Congress and who supports the Dearborn 4 and their Civil Rights.

But I would like to take a peek at questions of a psychological and social nature that have nothing to do with the legal angle. I repeat, nothing to do with it.

1) Can somebody tell me what the purpose was of having one Christian film a few other Christians from so far away?

2) And why was Nabeel, the Christian lady seen on the video inside the tent, wearing a bright red t-shirt bearing the words, "Jesus Always Loves You," and walking around next to David the Christian missionary?

3) What is the purpose of attending the Arab festival several years in a row, handing out Christian literature and making an earlier video (one that appears to have helped to raise David's ministry to a bit greater prominence, and maybe even helped earn a little more money for the ministry), in which he filmed Muslims attempting to respond in an off the cuff fashion to some of his well prepared questions. (I'm not sure whether David obtained release forms for that earlier video or not, but I doubt that going back to the same festival with a video camera a second time is going to earn him points with any Arabs who may or may not have seen or heard about David's earlier effort.)

Let me put it this way, there's a wide variety of things a person can do in public to see if their Civil Rights are being challenged.

But what was the purpose of returning again to the Arab festival and filming people (without release forms) for a video that could potentially wind up on a ministry website (as the first one did).

And why start out this year by filming from such a distance? Was it solely for safety reasons in case someone assaulted the male Evangelist or the woman in the bright red "Jesus Always Loves You" t-shirt?

I can understand taking safety measures, but I also suspect there could be another reason besides that one. There can be more than one reason, can't there? For instance, was there any sort of psychological wish on the part of David, Nabeel and Negeen to catch Arabs doing wrong to them? Was there any sort of psychological wish to show later on video how "violent" an Arab can be in the face of a team of Christians fishing for spiritual conversations and/or souls at an Arab festival? Was there any sort of psychological wish to re-enact "Daniel in the Lion's Den," or Jesus being rejected in a town, or Paul?

I'm just wondering.

Finally, let me put this in perspective a bit since I'm more of a writer/reader than a street evangelist type of fellow. I know that atheists write books with controversial titles, and say controversial things when interviewed, and even erect billboards, and raise formal legal complaints concerning use of public funds and lands to promote religion. But I don't know many atheists who would say, attend a local Greek festival held in the parking lot of the Greek Orthodox Church here in Greenville each year, wearing a t-shirt in bright red that says, "Your Friendly Neighborhood Atheist," hoping to get into a conversation an prove just how ridiculous Christianity and in particular the Greek Orthodox religion, is, and have such conversations video taped and put online just to show the red-faced off-the-cuff responses from Greek Orthodox at the festival (or even priests), and later show the video on youtube to raise awareness of the idiocy of Greek Orthodoxy, and then continue going back to the festival each year with a video camera and the t-shirts, etc.

Hey Ed,

Maybe someone else is interested in answering your questions. I just thought I would point out for everyone's benefit that you are not just "an agnostic with questions", as you benignly put it. You are a pronounced anti-Christian.

This is America and that's your prerogative, but show a little integrity and be up front about who you are and what you are about, especially since you are asking others what their real motives were.

In other words, in case you didn't notice it (or think someone else hasn't), you just came in here playing the "Im your friendly neighborhood agnostic" card and we both know what you are really up to.

I can understand taking safety measures, but I also suspect there could be another reason besides that one."

Heh. Darned if you do and darned if you don't, I guess.

Really? I mean, Bill Maher made a Hollywood movie doing just that. Or maybe Joe Safran? How many atheists do you know? In fact, I'm not sure if can think of anything more central to atheism than arrogant contempt for the uneducated and backwards religious peasants - it might even be more important to modern American atheism than denial of deity.

Ed,

Thanks for your questions.

1) For safety, since the security guards hit our cameras last year. For safety against slander, since the security guards lied in their police report last year saying we were yelling that Muslims were going to hell. We are debaters who discuss textual evidence and philosophical ideology. This accusation is untrue of our lifestyle, let alone untrue of that instance. So for integrity purposes.

2) Nabeel is a guy, and I’m not sure what you’re asking. He was walking next to his friend at the festival.

3) This was the second year at the festival. We didn’t hand out literature last year. They weren't handing out literature when they where arrested. David and a few friends handed out literature on Sunday, June 20th outside the festival. David is an avid debater who was already gaining prominence for his intellectual contributions. He will tell you he has lost money on both the trip last year and this year, not made money. This is a recalcitrant accusation that needs some kind of evidence. I think it has risen to the level of slander.

Nabeel and I approached the Islam Q&A booth at the festival last year to get a response to the pamphlet that he thought contained false or misleading information, and were going to post the response online, which we told the people. When they told us no cameras, we began to leave. Then they told us to come back and that we could film. Also, we only approached the people at the Isalm Q&A booth, the ones responsible for the material; not just any Muslim passing by. The security guards at the festival were the problem, not the Muslims at the festival; not the people answering our questions.

Confident Christianity said...

More for Ed:

Release forms: Why do you think they need release forms for filming at a public festival such as this? If they were going to sell the video, then perhaps there is a law somewhere. But what is giving you this notion?

The filming from a distance was for protection.

Psychological wishes: These guys, though I cannot jump in their minds (and neither can anyone), state that they wish for Muslims to come to the truth of Jesus Christ as savior. That is why they devote so much time to studying the texts of both Christianity and Islam. Their whole activity is not related to this one event.

Atheists attending events: This isn’t a one-to-one. ArabFest in Dearborn is not a Muslim festival according to the Arab Chamber of Commerce’s website description. It is an Arab cultural festival welcoming people of all faith backgrounds. This is a public, cultural festival. Plus, there are many Arab Christians. It is a stereotype of Arabs to think they are all Muslim.

Watch the last video of Nabeel engaged with some Muslim youths who are asking him questions. That is how these guys interact with the average person who is not a scholar or debater. It is not hostile or angry, as is being suggested (not by you). They wish to answer people’s questions.

I believe they posted their reasons for returning in an earlier blog post...possibly "Responses to Common Questions." I'll let their words speak for themselves.

Thanks!

William,
The mayor claims that these officers *were* sent to get special training. He also excuses them because they *might not have been aware of the festival rules*, even though he expects the out-of-state visitors to know them.

Again, this was not a Muslim event, EVEN SO, If Muslims were to give out the Qur'an at a Christian festival, I would certainly welcome it! The Qur'an speaks for itself. But, alas, some other Islamic propaganda would probably be chosen.

Please, somebody show me a Christian festival that has not allowed Muslims to engage festival goers in dialog, with or without video cameras. Also, I'd love to know of one on a public street.

In the past few weeks I have happened upon a number of videos where peaceful outdoor and, also, indoor events have been completely disrupted by people intent on disrupting the gathering. This includes an indoor event that was shut down due to the numbers and volume of protesters. Nothing was done to these people! How different from Dearborn! Acts17 was behaving nothing like these antagonists, and unlike Dearborn, no one was arrested.

In addition to foreigners, it seems there are many young Americans who don't know what it means to be an American, and who certainly don't value our precious right to zone free, free speech.

I can't believer there is any argument over these arrests. It is cut and dry that these were illegal arrests. Acts17 were never even asked to stop doing what they were doing, (though it was legal). The approval of the arrests makes these Muslims and the other posters look ignorant and--bad. You all have to separate the legality of their arrests from your approval of their message. "I disagree with what you say, but, I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

May I also remind those claiming the name of Christ, to love those who persecute you. Don't talk about how God requires men to love their wives and then mock the one you are writing to.

Meeko said...

David,
How did the security/police know Negeen was in your group, since she was not there last year? They could not have known that you did not have many more videographers without watching you carefully. I hope many people with a love for our freedoms--Muslims and others-- will come and videotape next year...without even being part of the group.

Btw, Perhaps the police could not figure out how to delete your video, without it looking obvious, since you had three cameras going at once. Perhaps during the three week wait, they were contemplating a flood or fire at the station to give them an excuse. heh.

What I want to know is what is with this Roger Williams?! (Hi Roger.) Why in the world did he (you)behave the way he(you) did? Is this really a Christian organization that he is with? Does not sound like it.
