"Is the Trinity consistent with the Old Testament?" Jonathan McLatchie vs. Yusuf Ismail
I recently engaged in a public moderated debate in South Africa with Muslim criminal defense lawyer and apologist, Yusuf Ismail. Our subject was the concept of God in the Hebrew Bible -- specifically, whether God reveals Himself as Triune in the Old Testament. Here is the recording of the debate.
This is a subject that is dear to my heart. However, I really think that Protestant theology on this subject has no depth. I am an Orthodox Christian, and I can see that the weakness I sense in our Protestant brothers theology is our strength. What do I mean. Well our Ecclesiology, our understanding of Scripture and Tradition our understanding of man, creation and our Soteriology is so deep. Our Protestant brothers need to find the writings of the Eastern Fathers (not exclusively of course) which are so central to the Universal One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Orthodox Christian Church. May I humbly suggest that in the future, before any debate on this topic, that they read the writings of such eminent Fathers such as: St Athansius, St Gregory of Nyssa, St Basil the Great & St Gregory of Nazianzos, especially his five theological orations. You will then be in a position to completely blow out of the water any muslim objection.
The doctrine of the Trinity is correct because this is how God has revealed Himself once and for all to His World. I am not interested in listening from people who say that the Holy Bible has been corrupted. Competent scholars have shown this to be incorrect many times. I think people who advance this theory are scared of actually coming to believe its message, and therefore become Christians.
Islam cannot be considered a revelation in the line of Biblical revelation because Islam is wrong theologically on many things, including its doctrine of God, Jesus, man and the goal of creation. Its a matter of Truth. This is an either/or question, not both/and.
After the death, Resurrection and Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, everything God could do for the salvation of man was accomplished on the cross. From hence forth, there was no need for another prophet, as our Lord Jesus has accomplished all things.
I should also state that Christianity and Islam both cannot be true. On the essential theological points, they are diametrically opposed to each other.
As a Christian, the only conclusion I can come to is that as Christianity is True Revelation (which is easily demonstrated), Islam must be false and Muhammed must be a false prophet and the Qu'ran is not a book you can trust at all.
Jesus Christ said you would know people from their fruits, and we have certainly seen the fruits of Muhammed and Islam around the world!
