Why Do Many Muslims Gain Weight During Ramadan?

Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting. Interestingly, on average, Muslims consume far more food during their month of fasting than they do during other months. Many Muslims also report dramatic weight-gain during Ramadan. This article in the Los Angeles Times discusses the unhealthy consequences of Islamic fasting.

CAIRO—The sun slips beyond the Nile and the fast is broken. As they have done for centuries during the holy month of Ramadan, Egyptians hurry home through the twilight to eat and drink after a long, scorching day.

Fasting renews the spirit but it often does little to trim the waist line. What happens between dusk and dawn can endanger health: Feasting, inactivity and disrupted sleep -– Muslims often stay up until 4 a.m. to eat a last meal before sunrise -- can add weight in a population already struggling with one of the highest obesity rates in the world.

“Unfortunately, many Muslim patients, and Muslims in general, tend to overeat upon breaking their fast, and usually the meal involves heavy, fatty foods that are high in calories,” Dr. Al Madani, head of Emirates Diabetes Society, told TradeArabia, an online news site.

The breaking of the fast usually begins with fresh dates and lots of water, followed by soups and juices, including a popular one made from berries and topped with pine nuts. Soon after evening prayers, a large meal called iftar is shared. Poor people are not left out: They dine under tents called “God’s tables,” which are donated by the wealthy and dot the neighborhoods of this sprawling, ancient city.

The feasting continues after dinner as Egyptians visit with family and friends. Special desserts such as creamy konafa and syrupy basboussa are served throughout the night. The next meal, or sohour, comes just before morning prayers; there are more sweets to supply fuel through the day’s fast.

This is repeated for 30 days.

Mahmoud Ismail said there are two ways to do Ramadan: one healthy, one less so. The 38 year-old father of two is a swim coach and physical education teacher in Cairo.

“I am working 8 until 3; then I exercise an hour before sunset,” he said.

“I cannot sleep the fast away,” Ismail added. “Too many people wake up at 3 in the afternoon or sleep at work during Ramadan.”

His wife struggles with her weight during Ramadan, often gaining more than 10 pounds: “Her schedule allows no chance to burn calories,” Ismail said. “All the night is eating and then cooking for the next iftar, then she sleeps at 3:20 after sohour until about 3 in the afternoon.”

Indeed, it is women -– the ones who in a patriarchal society spend endless hours in the kitchen -- who are most likely to have weight problems in Egypt.

Three in 4 Egyptian women are overweight, and nearly half are obese, according to the World Health Organization's most recent figures. Women here are among the fattest in the world, alongside their wealthy Arab neighbors in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

Access to exercise is one more challenge for Egyptian women. Only the wealthiest can afford health clubs, said Dr. Gulsen Saleh of the National Nutrition Institute, and the rest have no place for exercise.

Unfortunately, a sedentary life may be just as harmful to health as obesity. A recent study in the journal Lancet showed that inactivity, regardless of weight and other factors, increases risk of chronic diseases and earlier death.

But sweets are also to blame. A fasting brain prefers high-calorie carbohydrates above all. Scientists in Ajman, the United Arab Emirates, observed that more fats and sweets were consumed during Ramadan.

Of 173 families interviewed in Jidda, Saudi Arabia, two-thirds reported weight gain among some or all of the family members after Ramadan. Many pointed to the rich food and lack of exercise. (Continue Reading.)

Years ago I worked third shift for a few years. The team was such that you could temporarly switch schedules if need be.

What is funny is that every year during Ramadan the Muslim members on the team would switch schedules with non Muslims so they could sleep during the day and beat the fast.

Dear Rukiah,

David posted an article and many more earlier to prove that Ramadan is actually a period of FEASTING and not FASTING. These were articles from secular newspapers and not David's personal views. Please tell me how this justifies your view "you people like to insult muslims u have no faith within u, people that like to insult others have no faith within them.God dosent like that."??

Jesus never died on the cross.Bassed on who wrote the bible I can't trust christans.Look your not very trust worthy.U people call singing and danceing praising God. In islam we pray 5 times a day U hardly pray.

Dear Rukiah,

Firstly, no one over here knows except you whether you are a true 11 year old or a 91 year old. If you were so scared of an objective discussion then you shouldn't have made posts or be reading such articles.

Jesus was God who came as a human being and died for the sins of you and me and the rest of the world (including Muhammad). You said "Jesus is not God, how can someone rise from the dead"... Well, Jesus said “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.”(John 10:17-18)

Narrated 'Ursa:
The Prophet wrote the (marriage contract) with 'Aisha while she was six years old and consummated his marriage with her while she was nine years old and she remained with him for nine years (i.e. till his death). (Sahih Bukhari 7.88)

Narrated 'Aisha:
I used to play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet, and my girl friends also used to play with me. When Allah's Apostle used to enter (my dwelling place) they used to hide themselves, but the Prophet would call them to join and play with me. (The playing with the dolls and similar images is forbidden, but it was allowed for 'Aisha at that time, as she was a little girl, not yet reached the age of puberty.) (Fateh-al-Bari page 143, Vol.13) (Sahih Bukhari 8.151)

In short, Aisha was 2 years younger to you and Muhammad was as old as your grandfather when he married her. How can such a man be a prophet... he married even his own son's wife. I can send you all the references from Islamic scriptures... Please think about it... How can such a man be called a prophet of Allah?

I know this is something you may have never heard, but no Imam will ever teach you this... open your books and read who was Muhammad from it yourself.

I pray that the Good Lord open your eyes to the truth.

In Christ

Dear Rukiah,

Yes, we do call singing and dancing praising God since for a Christian, God is his/her father... and tell me, if your earthly father sees you singing and dancing adoring him, thanking him and telling him how much you love him... will he be happy or not??
For a Christian, prayer is talking to his/her father in heaven and not just mindless repetition like what happens during the Namaaz... Such behavior is forbidden for Christians Matthew 6:7 "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the pagans [do]: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking"

Yes, the differences between a Christian are too big.

I pray that you discover the truth in Christ at this tender age itself.

Nothing you said here was close to factual and which 'book' has more war and fighting is relevant to the point you want to make.

And here is where you show you don't know what you're talking about. Rukiah, this statement without facts is FALSE.

Prove the bible has been changed so many times and how many times has it been changed? When was the last time it was 'changed', what is the name of the person who 'changed' it?
And keep in mind whatever you say, we're going to verify and if it's wrong then so are you.

Prove it. Where are the snapshots of this perfect book? Whose keeping it? Where is it being kept and why?

What we know is 20 years or so after your prophet died it was not in written form. We know a caliph had everything gathered together and burned so only one copy of the Quran would be used.

We also know the man who compiled the Quran was not any of the men your prophet said to learn it from, so how do you know it's right?

Deleting said...

Your prophet said he was as does the Quran. It's one of the few statements the Quran got right.

@ Rukiah
If the bible has been changed then allah is a negligent god because how can confirm something that is not there?

Say: Whoever is the enemy of Jibreel-- for surely he revealed it to your heart by Allah's command, verifying that which is before it and guidance and good news for the believers.
Qur'an 2:97

we have the manuscripts since the the time of muhummed and before that. you can;t confirming something that is corrupted as it will lead others astray and to make matters worst it was god who did it.

literally its like turning up to a university exam without a exam pass in university or using a badly damaged one

so are you going to say allah is negligent because there is nothing to verify with?

Anonymous said...

Iknow what I'm tallking about face it you don't I got you there. The Quran never changed. The bible has changed so many times, some of the verses has been changed over generations just to fit people. You gave Jesus sins because you worship him. It has been changed accprding to what people think of history afther Jesus died chrisainity was born and the bible was written. That was long before Islam started so how can Islam be mentioned in the bible when it never existed at that period of time? The bible has twice the amount of violence than the Quran does face it.

Deleting said...

Rukiah said, "Iknow what I'm tallking about face it you don't I got you there."

You didn't prove it.

"The Quran never changed."
You didn't prove this either. Sahih hadith and pictures please.

"The bible has changed so many times, some of the verses has been changed over generations just to fit people. "

How many times has it changed Rukiah? 5? 6? Tell you what, since you can't tell me them maybe you can tell me which verses changed to fit which generations and to who?

"You gave Jesus sins because you worship him. "
This makes no sense whatsoever. If I worship you instead of Jesus without your permission since that's the assertion Muslims make about Christians, then how does that mean I give sins to you?

THINK before you POST!

"It has been changed accprding to what people think of history afther Jesus died chrisainity was born and the bible was written. "

Secular historical documents and arguments accurately verify the claims the New Testament makes. Archaeological discoveries do as well, one of the most recent being King David's Castle.

Also, you've just made an error according to the Quran because you admit Jesus died. The Quran says he didn't Surah 4:157.
Let me simplify it: Not only are you making incorrect statements, you just admitted Allah did too.

"That was long before Islam started so how can Islam be mentioned in the bible when it never existed at that period of time? "

You also need to start addressing which arguments you are making. What is this in reference too? Who are you trying to talk to in this statement.

Again, you need to stop and think before you post. Read what you're writing so it is clear to the person you are addressing.

"The bible has twice the amount of violence than the Quran does face it."

The bible's writings cover a span of 1500 years!! Are you operating under the assumption that since Islam people are holdings hands skipping through a meadow of clover?

No, in the short span of your prophet's ministry and afterwards the percentage of violence is WAY, WAY higher than the bibles. Face it.
And by the way, the bible's last instructions are to love your neighbor, not kill the disbeliever.

@ Deleting,

Even if Rukiah hadn't said in her earlier post that she was 11 years old, the behavior very well points to the immaturity.

In my earlier discussion with Hamza, he atleast tried defending the indefensible position of Islam and tried to provide some references but then had to drop out.

I had given to Rukiah numerous quotes from the Quran and the Hadiths of the behavior pattern of Muhammad - the sexual deviant (may the police be upon him), but there was no response to it. All Rukiah has been able to provide is blind spouting of nonsense she must have heard from her imam/maulvi or worse postings from Osama Abdallah hence the inherent lack of logic, common sense, general knowledge and ofcourse any evidence. Reminds me of the debate between Nabeel Qureshi Vs Shahid Lewis and Nabeel Qureshi Vs Paul Williams... Nabeel urging for references and objective responses and I remember the laughable position of Paul Williams "Don't tell me what to do"... I was laughing so much on Williams that I was almost feeling sorry for the imbecile.

Anycase, I suggest you to stop wasting time with this spoilt kid.

Hey David,

Down here in India, there is a month long fasting starting from tomorrow of the Hindus. This is a strange ritual, during this socalled fasting, they don't eat certain types of food such as non-veg, but to compensate that, they have delicacies prepared for eating during the time of fasting... laden with oil, butter, sugar, etc... it is a spectacle to see how these people celebrate their "fasting".

Now, get this, since from tomorrow the Hindus will start fasting, they have a celebration day today called as "Gatari" which has the root word "Gatar" which means "drain". Today, the Hindus will eat like there is no tomorrow, all the meat in all the shops have been sold off, the liquor stores would be emptied off, after drinking tonnes of Alcohol, a few will fall by the roadside and into the drains... hence the name of the festival "drains".

I don't intend to sound "self righteous" or "snobbish" but without the presence of Christ who points to us that it is all a matter of the heart, all these festivals, be it Ramadan or Gatari, all... provide nothing but the external solace to people that they are good... Matthew 23:27-28 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness."

How deceptive that the Devil has provided these rituals to soothe the human mind without exposing their hidden sins and giving them a way out of it.

Truly as it is written John 8:36 "Whom the son sets free is free indeed"

Chinchilla PetVerse said...

Dear Rukiah,

Again, sounds like a child jumping up and down. I am not sure whether I should be wasting my time responding to you... but let me do this one last time.

In all the statements given by me, @Deleting, David, etc... there were references to authentic Islamic literature. We asked you to answer our questions but you made allegations at Christianity without a single reference from the Holy Bible. I sent you verses from authentic Islamic sources of the true character of Muhammad but you were busy pointing at Christians without any evidence... just repeating "You know it" doesn't make it fact... just repeating "It is a fact" doesn't make it a fact if you don't have any evidence to back it up.

Now, again you said that "You think all muslims kill even children"... when did I say that? Also you said "I am trying to kick you out"... again, when did i say that?

Such behavior points to immaturity and hopefully when you grow up and start thinking beyond what your imam, maulvi, etc taught you and start investigating yourself with sincerity... hopefully, you will discover the truth and the truth shall set you free.

Take care and God Bless

In Christ,

Foolster41 said...

Rukiah: yes, you showed how open-minded you are... by declaring everyone else blind (and yourself right) and ignoring everyone else's arguments. You don't see how dishonest this is?

You don't explain the seemingly open-ended violent verses given in the Quroan, or give proof to your claim that the bible has changed (but you repeat it over and over as if that will fool us), but no, it's not you whose blind!

I would like to ask you an honest question, and I hope to get an honest answer: do you really believe what you are saying?

If so, then why don't you present the facts to show what you are saying is true?

If not, then why do you still believe in Islam? Do not fear others, and actions they will take against you if you leave Islam?

if you wish to leave Islam (even if it isn't to Christianity), you should do so. There are people out there who can help you.

Romans 8:38-39 says "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." I am praying that God will keep you safe .

Foolster41 said...

Do not fear others, and actions they will take against you if you leave Islam?

Oops. Thant makes no sense, I accidently mixed both a question and statement. What I meant to say was "Do you fear others, and actions they will take against you if you leave Islam?" and "don't fear them, it is better to be free."

Yes it's true, I belive you missed alot on Islam if you belive muslsims are killers. I am free, I only fear some people but I fear God the most. I wont leave Islam. Listen, I know what your trying to do but you can't force me out. More people will help me in Islam. Islam wll make me a peacefull person, you just don't get it ,you dont understand Islam very well. If you are an expert let me ask you a question:
What is islam?

Deleting said...

"rukiah said," ... Islam wll make me a peacefull person..."

Really? You come on here, attack us and our beliefs and then cry victim when you're presented proof of what muslims have done all in the name of islam.

You've called christians bullies and then bully us and when you're really frustrated you called us jews as if it's worse than being a christian.
Your jewish grandma (the one you told us about if she does indeed exist) must be so proud you use her ethnicity as an insult.
The adults willing to engage you in debate are treating you like an adult. We tell it like it is and tell you your a child and you get upset.

When is Islam supposed to make you a peaceful person.

Also, Islam is a political-relgious system that began in the late 6th/early 7th century in Saudi Arabia. There are three sources of authority: Quran. Sunnah and Hadith. The Quran is the dication of Allah, the Hadith are the sayings of Muhammad and the Sahabah and the Sunnah is the prescribed way of life coming from the Hadith whereas Muhammad is the shining example for all muslims to follow. There are 5 prayers a day, all in arabic and at prescribed times facing the Kaaba in veneration of the black stone. There is a month of fasting called Ramadan and the Hajj is coming up in November this year, a three day love fest for Allah complete with circulations of the kaaba, a visit to the place of Muhammad's last sermon, throwing rocks at the devil and running between two mountains reenacting the Koran's version of Hagar and Ishmael in the desert (though it took place over 700 miles away and not in the mecca). .

But I bet you want us to say Islam is peaceful.....

Foolster41 said...

I'm not trying to force anything of course (another nice ad honim straw man), I am only saying fear should not be a reason to stay in Islam.

"It's true"... but you still refuse to present evidence that it's true, or anwswer objections that seem to show Islam false (e.g. the biblical corruption paradox)!

Of course I never claimed to be an "expert". And I never said all Muslims are killers (your keep spouting these ad honims, but strangly your convinced you're the one arguing honestly?!)

But if Islam is peaceful, perhaps you could answer my questions that I already asked (in fact, multiple times) first before I answer yours:

1.)Could you present proof that Islam is peaceful, that the seemingly violent open-ended verses (specifically book 9) that were given at the END of Mohammad's life are being misunderstood by Muslims (after all, any non-muslim objections is based on what your co-religionists are doing.)?

2.)Could you please explain, with proof the claim that the bible changed, as you claimed? I'm always confused by this, since we have manuscripts we get our modern bibles from dating to around 200 AD, long before Mohammad was even born. How was Jesus' message altered, and by whom? What happened to the originals, and how did so many of the 1st and 2nd generations seem to go along with this change, as evidenced by additional writings? What are adidtional writings at the time that supports the claim of Jesus' message matching that of Mohammad's?

3.)If you cannot answer my questions, why not?

Saying something is true is not proof. saying something is true without presenting proof, and refusing to do so only reinforces the idea that you don't actually believe what you are saying.

Anonymous said...

I didn't attack you. I was trying to proove islam is peacefull with EVERYTHING I KNOW. Well I found a website that has islamic purpouses and what Islam really is:

Anonymous said...

Fear is not a reason. You know why I am going to stick with my religon for the rest of my life because christianity and jewish makes no sense at all.

Foolster41 said...

Lying again. You came on here talking about how Christianity is false, and how Christianity is more violent than the bible (which you don't provide evidence and is off-topic). I'd call that an attack.

" christianity and jewish makes no sense at all."
But Islam makes perfect sense, even though Mohammad claimed Jesus was a prophet that taught a very different message than what was written down hundreds of years before he was born, but somehow "colrupted" so the true message (that, as I said we had hundreds of years before Mohammad was born) no longer exists today. Right. Are you ever going to present proof to back up my claim?

Foolster41 said...

I looked at that website, and it seems pretty sloppy to me. On the page about violence in the Koran, there is no mention or refutation of book 9 (which was revealed near the end of Mohammad's life, nor any mention of the concept of abrogation. I notice two of the peacerful verses he cites are from the Mecca period, but someone who didn't know about the history of Islam might be fooled into thinking all verses are equal in Islam.

In the section of Anti-semetism there is no mention of the Hadith that says the end will not come until Jews are killed, and rocks and trees will cry out for Jew's deaths, and yet I'm supposed to take this site as honest?

I find nothing on the site explaining the "corruption" paradox, as mentioned above, the site mearly claims Jesus as a Muslim prophet with no explination.

I find it humorous that a list of
"Some examples of wise and useful words as found in other cultures"
are all form the Quoran, so I guess to them all cultures are Islamic and Arabic?

This isn't proof, you need to do better than this. If this is the "evidence" you have, then why are you still Muslim? Even if Christianity and Judaism makes no sense, Islam makes even less sense!

Foolster41 said...

"Are you ever going to present proof to back up my claim?"
oops. I meant back up your claims of course.

You blame muslims for attacks most wars werent created/stareted by muslims they were started by non-muslims such as:
The first war(17million dead)
The second war(50-55 million dead)
Nagasaki atomic bombs( 2oo,ooo dead)
The war in Vietnam (over 5 million dead)
The war in Kosovo ( 500,00 dead)
The war in Iraq (so far 1,200,000 dead)
Afghanistan, Burma ect.

Foolster41 said...

Please look up "Tu Quo Que falacy". All of those things don't even remotely prove that Islam is peaceful, or that Islamic attacks by the hundreds of thousands aren't happening. which is what I actually asked.

Also, that's not proof. You spout out numbers, but no citations of where these numbers come from, or indication of who the people are dead. It looks like you're just totaling everyone who died, which is ridiculous, since that includes blaming non-muslims for the death of aggressors such as Nazis and Communists. Are you seriously saying killing someone who attacks you is wrong?

War (as tragic as it is) is not remotely the same the same as when Muslim terrorists murder or torture non-muslims.

Also, you might want to do some reading on the use of the bomb. It was used to halt a war that would have claimed many many more lives on both sides.

You're lying. I never said any such thing (perhaps you could point to ehre I said any such thing?). Of course I don't believe all muslims are terrorists. Those who follow the teachings of mohammad (i.e non westernized muslims) are the ones being violent.

Try again. Still waiting for you to show how all those violent muslims are misunderstanding their own religion as you claim, instead of throwing mud at people with false accusations.

I assume this was a typo, but it is very true.

You didn't say some Christians are, you said I am, which is a lie. Unless by "you" are referring to all Christians, which means you're treating all Christianity as a monolith. Strange, weren't you complaining about painting Muslims with a broad brush strokes? Why is it okay for a Muslim to make a broad claim that about Christians, but Christians aren't allowed to do the same to Muslims? It seems a bit hypocritical.

I'm still waiting for you to stop saying things without presenting evidence. What did I say that was false? Your low effort posts are getting really annoying.

Further reading these religious arguments, just convinced me again that Religion is the Root of Evil. More people are killed in the name of one or an other god. And there were many gods in the history of mankind. Sirius, Osiris, Apollo, Jupiter, Bacchus, Zeus, Wodan, Thor, Frya, Yaw-eh, Jesus, Allah, Hara Krishna, Buddha (the most peaceful one) Imagine there is no religion...
