McDonald's Pays $700,000 to Dearborn Muslims for Possibly Serving Non-Halal McChicken Sandwiches

Some Dearborn Muslims may have been given non-halal chicken at McDonalds. It could have been worse, however. They could have been thrown in jail for answering questions, as we were at the 2010 Arab Festival. But apparently what happens to Christians doesn't matter in Dearborn.

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - McDonald's and one of its franchise owners agreed to pay $700,000 to members of the Muslim community to settle allegations a Detroit-area restaurant falsely advertised its food as being prepared according to Islamic dietary law.

McDonald's and Finley's Management Co. agreed Friday to the tentative settlement, with that money to be shared by Dearborn Heights resident Ahmed Ahmed, a Detroit health clinic, the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn and lawyers.

Ahmed's attorney, Kassem Daklallah, told The Associated Press on Monday that he's "thrilled" with the preliminary deal that's expected to be finalized March 1. McDonald's and Finley's Management deny any liability but say the settlement is in their best interests.

The lawsuit alleged that Ahmed bought a chicken sandwich in September 2011 at a Dearborn McDonald's but found it wasn't halal — meaning it didn't meet Islamic requirements for preparing food. Islam forbids consumption of pork, and God's name must be invoked before an animal providing meat for consumption is slaughtered.

Daklallah said there are only two McDonald's in the United States that sell halal products and both are in Dearborn, which has one of the nation's largest Arab and Muslim communities. Overall, the Detroit area is home to about 150,000 Muslims of many different ethnicities.

The locations advertise that they exclusively sell halal Chicken McNuggets and McChicken sandwiches and they have to get those products from an approved halal provider, Dakallah said. He said there was no evidence of problems on the production side, but he alleges that the Dearborn location on Ford Road sold non-halal products when it ran out of halal. (Continue Reading.)

It's the end of the world. A Muslim ate "bad" chicken.

Does Halal chicken still taste like chicken???

I mean seriously, did a muslim bite into one and not feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside.

How would someone know? I mean seriously, how would someone know?

I wonder what would happen if all the halal shops in town closed down....

Mosaic purity laws concerning food (some of which found their way into the Koran)

It is important to point out that a distinction needs to be made between the general commands given to all of mankind, and some of the numerous and seemingly odd commands which were specific and unique only to the tiny nation of Israel in the time of Moses (Mosaic laws) in the Old Testament i.e. in Deuteronomy and Leviticus.

The reason for these numerous laws, rules and regulations, was that, being the nation through which the Messiah, the Christ, was to enter the world, Israel needed to be kept separated from, and undefiled by the idolatrous and often vile practices of the pagan tribes that surrounded them.

In other words, Israel needed to be kept in one piece in order to get Christ to the cross. This can be seen in the genealogy of Jesus in Mathew 1:1 and also in Luke 3:23-38, which goes all the way back to Adam.

And Satan, being well aware that the Son, the Redeemer, Christ, had been promised through a line of the descendants of Israel, did his best to sabotage this line by any means possible. This being the central theme of the Old Testament, from when Adam rebelled against God, all the way through to the New Testament. And this is also the reason for God’s sometimes severe judgement and even extermination of some of the surrounding pagan tribes, whom Satan had recruited and was working through in trying to ruin God’s plans for the redemption of mankind.

Many of the Mosaic purity laws concerning food, drink, etc. were specifically put in place for Israel only (even then, some rules or standards were only for the priesthood, so that they were clean enough to enter into the inner sanctum of the temple, the holy of holy’s, where God’s presence resided. In other words, the peoples representatives before God were required to be neat and tidy out of respect to God) until the time of Jesus and in no way apply to us today. Only those universal commandments and prohibitions in the Old Testament which are also found in the New Testament apply in today’s world.
For example, some prohibitions that universally apply to everyone are:

Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor those who participate in homosexuality, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 1Corinthians 6:9, 10

Whereas, Mosaic rules concerning food and drink are dealt with as follows:

So he said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him, because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?” Mark 7:18, 19

It is what is in a man’s heart that defiles him, not what he eats or drinks.

“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these things come from within and defile a man.” Mark 7:21-23

Despite this, there are some whose conscience will be offended by the idea of eating certain foods, but that is personal thing and cannot be used to judge others; nor should those who do eat certain foods judge those who don’t.

For one believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him.
I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. Romans 14:2, 3, 14

In other words, one should not offend the other with what they do or don’t eat, but keep it to themselves...

Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. Verse 22 (the rest of chapter 14 in Romans has all the finer points)

...because on this subject it is a case of each to their own

Therefore let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or Sabbaths. Colossians 2:16

Drink:

The Bible makes it quite clear in many places that it is the excess consumption of wine leading to drunkenness that causes problems...

Wine is a mocker, intoxicating drink arouses brawling, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. Proverbs 20:1

...not with the consumption of wine itself within its proper context and quantity...

Here is what I have seen: it is good and fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour in which he toils under the sun all the days of his life which God gives him; for it is his heritage.
Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already accepted your works. Ecclesiastes 5:18, 9:7

...that is, for our health

He [God] causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and vegetation for the service of man, that he may bring forth food from the earth, and wine that makes glad the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread which strengthens man’s heart. Psalm 104:14, 15

It should also be noted however, that the wine that is referred to in scripture was, in general, reasonably mild in strength (unlike much of the commercially produced wine of today); it was also diluted with water to balance its flavour and strength. It was also usually only consumed at meal times, as the above verses describe.

bob said...

But having said that: to make such a fuss (in order to gain a payment) over having possibly eaten something which the general public eats anyway and which only passes through the body and is eliminated (as per Mark 7:18, 19), is just mischief disguised behind a pious facade.

Is it only pork that is haram for Muslim? How about eating bird, cat, horse, venissen meat, crocodile meat? Is it clearly stated what meat is haram and what meat is halal in the book of this insane religion?

Psalm 50:
...
9 I have no need of a bull from your stall
or of goats from your pens,
10 for every animal of the forest is mine,
and the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know every bird in the mountains,
and the insects in the fields are mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you,
for the world is mine, and all that is in it.
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
or drink the blood of goats?
...

“What right have you to recite my laws
or take my covenant on your lips?
17 You hate my instruction
and cast my words behind you.
18 When you see a thief, you join with him;
you throw in your lot with adulterers.
19 You use your mouth for evil
and harness your tongue to deceit.
20 You sit and testify against your brother
and slander your own mother’s son.
21 When you did these things and I kept silent,
you thought I was exactly[c] like you.
end quote.

The perfect words-- they are God's truth and they directly indict halal slaughter and Jihad.
These are not the "sacrifie of thanksgiving" that is required.
These are not sacred devotion, but profane magic.

Bob,

that's what Islam is a pseudo and superficial religion.
Muslims are no different than the pharisees from Jesus' day.

Derick Abdul-Hakim,

Dont waste your life Islam.

Islam isn't submission to some god you believe exists. Islam is the fear that someone somewhere may be happy.

McDonald's lied. In principle, it must pay. Justice is what distinguishes Muslim judicial systems from non-Muslim ones.

But what if the judge dismissed the charges? Certainly, there would have been a huge outcry by the Muslim community.

When Muslims immigrate to the West, they take advantage of western laws and western democracy. In their own countries, however, they practice overt discrimination against non-Muslims.

Muslim hypocrisy must be exposed.

Derrick said, "I asked a simple question, one with no particular motive in mind."

I disagree. This was a loaded question and you know it was.

I did, however, answer it...with sarcasm.

There's more where that came from my wordy muslim friend....

Islam is a miserable "religion."

If you tell a Muslim that his God is imaginary, he will stab you.

On the other hand if you tell a Christian that his God is imaginary, he will pray for you.

If wasn't such a serious matter, it would be utterly hilarious.

Deleting,

Having my questions answered directly seems to be a seasonal luxury around here. Sarcasm, however, seems to be in great supply. I read your initial post and I’m just as blank as I was when I first read it. Contrary to what you might think I really would like to know where you stand with respect to my question. Let’s abstract away from the discussed item and speak generally. Do you think *any* company that claims to serve halal meat to customers who demand halal meat is negligent if it *knowingly* serves non-halal products without informing its customers? If that’s too Muslim for your sensibilities you can replace “halal meat” with “kosher meat” if that helps; if that’s too concrete insert anything you like.

I ask for a variety of reasons, one reason I’ll make explicit: nothing new. There’s nothing legally unique or religiously significant about this case. If the Dearborn McDonald’s branch did serve non-halal meat to its customers without informing them then I can understand the Muslim grievance claims as far as negligence is concerned. Their grievance claims then would be like so many other negligence-compensation grievance claims that come across the news wire. To paraphrase Michael Corleone, it’s not personal but law. But if it’s just law as usual, what’s so special about this case?

I really would like you to answer my question, if it’s not too “wordy” for you.

Dear God, now he wants to talk ME to death.

Derrick, either your an idiot (entirely possible) or you're a liar (also entirely possible).

This was a load question.

You even admitted as such Derrick, 'I ask for a variety of reasons...'
i.e. LOADED QUESTION.

I'm not answering it the way you want me too because you want to make a point of something and I'm not going to be drawn into an obtuse argument for the sake of spreading Islam.

Arrow, however, answered your question and he did so beautifully, why aren't you engaging him after all?

He seems to want to engage with you.

There are stupid people who do NOT understand the concept of what halal is and what haram is. According to the islamic rules nothing happened! If food is sold as halal, but in fact it isn't then there is nobody to blame. No need to mention it or take action. It may look strange, but it isn't! There are special rules for moslem that they can not be held responsible if they ate haram food and the seller told them it was halal. So nothing happened! Only McDonalds paid seven hundred big ones too a bunch of crooks! They make to much profit anyway, and if not this lesson should be paid anyway!

All food is halal as it is sold as halal! If McDonalds sold the chicken-wings as halal, then automatically they are halal. Having to speak out a lie during the slaughter does not change anything to the rotten remains of the dead animal! Hey, McDonalds you have been had! You've been scammed out of seven hundred big ones, who is the fool now?

Maybe it becomes time to leave McDonalds and get the fatning food somewhere else! Maybe we have to call McDonalds in future to a name more suitable: McDhimmy!
