I know that the Islamic claim is that such killings are cultural and not Qu'ranic per se; but, I often wonder about this. I think that there are ayah and possibly hadiths that could be used to legitimately promote or sanction such acts.

No question. I can make a pretty solid case for these killings from the Muslim sources. An outline would go something like this:

(1) According to Islam, any significant divergence from Muslim practice is enough to place a person in the "apostate" category.

(2) The penalty for apostasy is death.

(3) Muhammad commanded his followers to carry out Allah's punishments even against their own family members.
