Sheikh Nasser al-Omar Calls for Execution of Hamza Kashgari for "Shameful" Comments about Muhammad on Twitter

Could anyone imagine the international uproar if a Christian pastor started demanding the death sentence for Muslims who say that Jesus isn't God? But when a Muslim sheikh demands the death penalty for a man who speaks against Muhammad, no one is surprised.

THE DAILY BEAST--Last week, just before the anniversary of the Prophet Muhammad’s birth, Hamza Kashgari, a 23-year-old Saudi writer in Jidda, took to his Twitter feed to reflect on the occasion.

“On your birthday, I will say that I have loved the rebel in you, that you’ve always been a source of inspiration to me, and that I do not like the halos of divinity around you. I shall not pray for you,” he wrote in one tweet.

“On your birthday, I find you wherever I turn. I will say that I have loved aspects of you, hated others, and could not understand many more,” he wrote in a second.

“On your birthday, I shall not bow to you. I shall not kiss your hand. Rather, I shall shake it as equals do, and smile at you as you smile at me. I shall speak to you as a friend, no more,” he concluded in a third.

Twitter quickly flooded with responses to Kashgari, registering more than 30,000 within a day. He was accused of blasphemy, and enraged Saudis called for his death. By the time he removed the tweets and issued a long apology, backtracking on his comments and begging for forgiveness, the danger had already expanded beyond the Web. Someone posted Kashgari’s home address in a YouTube video, and, his friends say, vigilantes came looking for him at his local mosque. The Saudi information minister banned Kashgari’s local newspaper column and barred outlets across the country from publishing his work. Nasser al-Omar, an influential cleric, called for him to be tried in a Sharia court for apostasy, which is punishable by death. Other leading clerics decried Kashgari on their own, and Saudi Arabia’s council of senior scholars issued a rare and harshly worded communiqué condemning him and his tweets and demanding that he be put on trial. Yesterday, Saudi Arabia’s leading news site, SABQ, reported that the king himself had issued a warrant for Kashgari’s arrest.

With the pressure mounting, Kashgari fled to Southeast Asia earlier today. Hours later, in his first interview with the press, he told The Daily Beast that he was stunned by the turn of events but resigned to the fact that he can never return home. “It’s impossible. No way,” he said. “I’m afraid, and I don’t know where to go.” Kashgari says he is now planning to apply for asylum abroad. (Read more.)

Islam the religion of if you turn your back you will be killed. Sigh. It's amazing people won't listen. They don't realize western Muslims don't follow Sharia.

What's amazing is this: Killing Homosexuals and apostates is part of Sharia law. Forbidding the spread of another religion is also part of Sharia. So Dearborn, Michigan enforces some of Sharia, and doesn't follow the other part.

I bet if Sharia were to completely take over a city and homosexuals were killed, society would wake up to Islam. They would finally realize this IS part of Sharia law and doesn't need to be in the US.

The Middle East would still hate America even if Islam took over because they would think America isn't following Islam properly.

That is sad indeed!

Notice some of the replies to that article. Muslims will defend Mohammad to the ends of the earth and with their lives if necessary. Whether they understand it or not, Mohammad is a god to them. How else can you explain such over-the-top reactions and threats to protect him and his image? Mohammad is not a demigod; for, he is God to them and creates a partner with Allah, their other god. Muslims are committing shirk every day; so, I guess they will be surprised when they enter hell forever. They won't be purified and get out of hell as they think the Qu'ran teaches, however. Since the disbelievers are already destined to hell and the Muslims worship Mohammad in a certain sense, that means that only Allah will be in heaven.

Here is one reply that I thought was an example of Islamic mind control. The friends of Kashgari were threatened too and some of them feel the need to lie in order to escape being persecuted along with him. One of them said the following:

“Right now we’re not worried about freedom of speech. We’re worried about the safety of our friend. And right now we can only help his safety if we condemn him, and [from there] try to rationalize what he said.”

Islam suppresses critical thought, speech, and dissension to the point that one succumbs to it. Either believe and support what you have been told, else suffer the consequences for thinking for yourself.

One of the major hurdles is for Westerners to realize that the more strict/traditional/historical teachings of Islam Muslims are incompatible with western societies. Westerners too often allow Islamic ideas and practices a pass through with little or no scrutiny in part due to multiculturalism which creates the idea that all ideologies and cultures carry the same basic values and are not much different. The other major problem is that westernized Muslims have already watered down Islam to a point where it more closely resembles our western values. Consequently, non-Islamic Westerners assume that those Muslims are representing the historical, traditional Islam. To a large degree, I feel that multiculturalism excuses Westerners from properly examining Islam.

There is some truth in that. Of course, there are no actual laws that allow for its implementation. As normal in America, for example, it is the mindset of too many politicians in powerful areas of influence that enforce Islamic principles when they deny our own set of laws in trying to appease Muslims.

Right now, there are too many liberals and lefties that wouldn't figure it out until it hit them in their own neighborhoods. They only seem to see their own stupidity of failed discernment until its too late. Even then, they don't seem to confess it or take the blame--kind of like Muslims who never can admit their own faults and improperly justify it on the backs of others.

You are probably right.

Great point!!! And one that Muslims need to think about seriously. Many Muslims treat Muhammad in a way that actually is equal to worship. I mean which Christian or a Jew (or for that matter people of any other faith barring cults which worship their prophets) would go to such a length to protect their prophets? This is an area that Muslims need to be truthful to themselves.

In fact, I would argue that Muslims in some aspects revere Muhammad greater than Allah (though Muslims would vehemently deny it with words and might not even be aware of it). Lets imagine if the Saudi writer wrote the same of Allah instead of Muhammad:
I will say that I have loved the rebel in you, that you’ve always been a source of inspiration to me, and that I do not like the halos of divinity around you.... I will say that I have loved aspects of you, hated others, and could not understand many more.

Would the Islamic community responded with such a passion as in this case? I don't think so. Allah cartoons probably would not get the same reaction from Muslims as the Muhammad cartoons.

Their actions speak louder than their words.

I thought that I would comment on the portions of the sheikh's fatawah

"And it is known that cursing Allah and Mohammad is apostasy (Punishable by death)

As for what has been mentioned about his repentance, which was expressed in a cold manner

With COLD words!

That is of no use for him in our judiciary system

And the scholars have said whoever curses god and his prophet should be sentenced for Apostasy, Even if he repented"

In this case, it is not enough to repent because it is not sincere; but, they have hadiths that say that one can denounce Islam and repent if confronted and a recant is given before or upon the third attempt to persuade the Muslim to return to Islam. So much for that repentence. The irony for me is that compulsion of Islam forces people to either remain a Muslim out of coersion or to become one under the threat of death or dihmitude. Those two instances are definitley done in a 'cold manner with cold words' as with the sheikh words above. Then why should any of those confessions ever be accepted by Muslims if they are coerced heavily?

If Mohammad is not a god, then why have such emotion and religious fervor over what someone says and then demand execution? There is no precedent for this in any other religion that I am aware of. Prophets are special in the sense that they were chosen by God, but where would an execution be permitted unless one actually killed one of them? That would be a proper application for to ask for one's death. Of course, that is not the case; so, think about it Muslims. Why does anything critical of Mohammad gets special treatment as if it were being critical of Allah too. It makes no sense! Of course, and unless you worship Mohammad. Since you are commanded to follow his example and love him more than yourslef, that makes the case for me that you really do worship him. Of course, you don't worship him in the tradition sense of praying to him or bowing to him as if he is God, but the over zealous actions used to protect him speaks volumes to me. No other man or even prophet gets this attention--not even Jesus, Moses, or Abraham.

Considering the mild rebuke of MuhamMAD that this man wrote, can you imagine what would be the response to the criticism of Islam regularly posted to David's blog here?

If the Saudis would behead a man and a woman for practicing sorcery and witchcraft respectively, in the 21st century, I don't think they would have much problem beheading most any of the critics of Islam found on this blog.

You know...

Saudi Arabia has made a tremendous amount of wealth from Oil sales. And the problem here is quite perplexing. You'd think that of all the predominantly Islamic countries, they'd be leading the way to have responsible discussions and criticisms about Islam -- but you don't see that.

Instead, they call for someone's death just for expressing an opinion. No wonder the growing number of Saudis are either one of 3:

- closet atheists

- closet Christians (yay)

- or just folks wearing the cloak of islam until "party time".

I used to know a Lebanese Christian who told me that Lebanese muslo-nazis are frequently hypocrites, in private, drinking liquor and criticising Islam, but in public they screeched and screamed just as loudly as the rest about killing Jews and destroying Israel. His Christian village in Lebanon was taken over by muslo-nazis, the centuries-old church razed and the cemetery in which his family had been buried for centuries desecrated. He stated flat-out muslimes had ruined Lebanon.

This is scary people. What this means is that if you exercise your freedom of speech in the US and break the barabic laws of some camel dung country. Then you can be flagged by interpol while traveling over seas, arrested and deported to said camel dung country to face prosection and execution.

"Islam suppresses critical thought, speech, and dissension to the point that one succumbs to it. "

his is why there has not been one single advance in science or technology in Muslim countries since the 7th century.

On the other hand, you can pick quotes from the Koran that say that Muslims should not force Islam on anyone; their job is only to deliver the message.

Islam is a cult. It is so pathetic to see an elderly man like this crying like a baby over allah and mohammed. The guy is not even allowed to repent. In Islam it is total submission. You are not allowed to think for yourself. This religion is from the pit of Hell.
