Of Mosques and Men: Reflections on the Ground Zero Mosque

Qur'an 3:28—Let not the believers take disbelievers for their friends in preference to believers. Whoso doeth that hath no connection with Allah unless (it be) that ye but guard yourselves against them, taking (as it were) security. Allah biddeth you beware (only) of Himself. Unto Allah is the journeying.

Ibn Kathir on 3:28—Allah said next, (unless you indeed fear a danger from them) meaning, except those believers who in some areas or times fear for their safety from the disbelievers. In this case, such believers are allowed to show friendship to the disbelievers outwardly, but never inwardly. For instance, Al-Bukhari recorded that Abu Ad-Darda' said, "We smile in the face of some people although our hearts curse them.'' Al-Bukhari said that Al-Hasan said, "The Tuqyah is allowed until the Day of Resurrection.''

Qur'an 5:51—O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.

Qur’an 9:29—Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the Religion of Truth, from among the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

Qur’an 9:73—O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be unyielding to them; and their abode is hell, and evil is the destination.

Qur’an 9:111—Surely Allah has bought of the believers their persons and their property for this, that they shall have the garden; they fight in Allah's way, so they slay and are slain; a promise which is binding on Him in the Taurat and the Injeel and the Quran; and who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? Rejoice therefore in the pledge which you have made; and that is the mighty achievement.

Qur’an 9:123—O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness; and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).

Qur’an 47:35—Be not weary and fainthearted, crying for peace, when ye should be uppermost: for Allah is with you, and will never put you in loss for your (good) deeds.

Qur'an 98:6—Verily, those who disbelieve from among the People of the Book and the idolaters, will be in the Fire of Hell, abiding therein. They are the worst of creatures.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6924—Allah’s Messenger said, “I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: La ilaha illallah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), and whoever said La ilaha illahllah, Allah will save his property and his life from me.”

Sahih Muslim 30—It is reported on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah said: I have been commanded to fight against people so long as they do not declare that there is no god but Allah, and he who professed it was guaranteed the protection of his property and life on my behalf except for the right, and his affairs rest with Allah.

Sahih Muslim 33—It has been narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. Umar that the Messenger of Allah said: I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and they establish prayer, and pay Zakat and if they do it, their blood and property are guaranteed protection on my behalf except when justified by law, and their affairs rest with Allah.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2785—Narrated Abu Hurairah: A man came to Allah’s Messenger and said, “Guide me to such a deed as equals Jihad (in reward).” He replied, “I do not find such a deed.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2787—Allah guarantees that He will admit the Mujahid in His Case into Paradise if he is killed, otherwise He will return him to his home safely with rewards and war booty.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2795—Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet said, “Nobody who dies and finds good from Allah (in the Hereafter) would wish to come back to this world, even if he were given the whole world and whatever is in it, except the martyr who, on seeing the superiority of martyrdom, would like to come back to the world and get killed again (in Allah’s cause).”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2796—Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, “A single endeavor (of fighting) in Allah’s cause in the afternoon or in the forenoon is better than all the world and whatever is in it.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2797—Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet said, . . . “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is! I would love to be martyred in Allah’s Cause and then come back to life and then get martyred, and then come back to life again and then get martyred and then come back to life again and then get martyred.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2810—Narrated Abu Musa: A man came to the Prophet and asked, “A man fights for war booty; another fights for fame and a third fights for showing off; which of them is in Allah’s Cause?” The Prophet said, “He who fights that Allah’s Word (i.e., Allah’s religion of Islamic Monotheism) be superior, is in Allah’s Cause.”

Sunan An-Nasa’i 3099—It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: “Whoever dies without having fought or having thought of fighting, he dies on one of the branches of hypocrisy.”

Sunan An-Nasa’i 3138—Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari said: “A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah and said: ‘A man fights for fame, or he fights for the spoils of war, or he fights to show off. Who is the one who is fighting in the cause of Allah?’ He said: ‘The one who fights so that the word of Allah will be supreme is the one who is fighting in the cause of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime.’”

Sunan Ibn Majah 2763—It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever meets Allah with no mark on him (as a result of fighting) in His cause, he will meet Him with a deficiency.”

Sahih Muslim 4366—It has been narrated by ‘Umar b. al-Khattab that he heard the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) say: I will expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula and will not leave any but Muslim.

Al-Bukhari, Al-Adab al-Mufrad 1103—Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Do not give the People of the Book the greeting first. Force them to the narrowest part of the road.”

Ibn Hazm on the Pact of Umar—These are the Rules and Regulations that were imposed by ‘Umar ibn-al-Khattab on the Christians of Syria, after conquering their land. The purpose of these rules was to make them submissive and contemptible. Christians were in no way to exhibit any sign of their unbelief, or anything forbidden in Islam; since Allah, the supremely Glorified and Honored, had said:

“And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah. But if they cease, then lo! Allah is Seer of what they do.” (Qur'an 8:39, Pickthall)

. . . “[The Christians] are forbidden to build churches, or monasteries, in their cities or nearby areas. They are not allowed to renovate such buildings. They must allow any Muslim to lodge in these buildings for three nights, and provide him with food. They must never shelter a spy, nor show any duplicity to Muslims. They are not to teach their children the Qur’an. They must not display any sign of their unbelief, or forbid their relatives from converting freely to Islam. Furthermore, they must show reverence to Muslims, and give them pride of place at their assemblies. They should avoid appearing like Muslims in their clothing, their head covers, their shoes, and the parting of their hair. They must not speak the language of Muslims, nor use their names. They are not allowed to use a saddle on a beast of burden, nor bear a sword, nor any other weapon. Their rings must not bear any Arabic inscriptions. They must refrain from selling wine. They must have the front of their hair cut, and wear their own kind of clothing all the time, and must use belts. They are not to display a cross or any of their books, as they are passing Muslims on their way. Their dead must not be buried nearby a Muslim cemetery. They should not ring their bells in a loud manner; equally, they must not raise their voices while reading their Scriptures in their churches. They are forbidden to parade their palm branches. Now should Christians ever deviate from obeying these rules, Muslims would cease to honor the covenant that had protected them. In that case, Muslims can deal with them as if they have become people of discord and trouble.”

They're building a mosque near Ground Zero to "honor the victims of 9/11"?!

I am really wondering how anyone could ever possibly think that building a mosque near Ground Zero is good. In my opinion, it is dishonor, and I fail to see how anyone could see it as honor. As for the two Muslim organizations who are doing this, I cannot see inside their hearts and I cannot discern their motives; only YHWH, the one true God, can.

WOW way to put it all together.

I did find the picture of George Bush as a Talib quite funny.

The image of the veil on lady liberty is quite telling. Yes when Islam comes to town Liberty is Veiled.

Can we Americans seriously be that guillible to believe that the mosque will HONOR the families of 9/11? Seriously, it almost seems like a prank to me. And to top it all off, they're going to open it on 9/11? Wow...just wow. We need more people like Rick Barber.

A Muslim center there would be insensitive.Remember for example that Jews were killed in Auschwitz in the name of nazism.

Even so a church or cross near it would be offensive to Jewish feelings, even though the NT was not responsible for nazism.Hitler was not killing in the name of the NT,or Jesus.

Jesus said "Do to others as you would..."The Muslims are PUSHING their mosque on others. It was NOT non-Muslims who asked them to make it,they want to impose it on the non-Muslims.

ON THE OTHER HAND
It has backfired. Most people are offended, again Islam is being despised as arrogant, insensitive, imperialistic.
Great idea on the part of those Muslim organizers, real public relations geniuses.

What they should do is to REALLY HELP persecuted NON-MUSLIMS in Muslim lands.Hold protests in front of the Pakistani embassy calling for the rejection of the "Death for apostasy and blasphemy"law there. Not one day but WEEK after WEEK.They won't do it.

Another chance missed and Islam again going down.

Named in the name off those who conquered, destroyed, subdued, raped, killed? disgusting!!! It woulde be like building a Nazi building in Aushwitz named Adof Hitler...

By far the best argument against building the Ground Zero Mosque I have come across!!! The linkage of Islamic triumphalism in history, to 911, and finishing it up with the present is pure brilliance. Sadly the politically and multiculturally beholden elites seem incapable of even seeing this. Instead they falsely see Islam through the lens of their own religious/cultural/civilizational upbringing blinding them to the fact the golden rule in Islam is not "live and let live" nor "love thy enemy or neighbor" but that "all must submit to allah." We can only hope the elites wake up one day before its to late.

Thx

"Cordoba House"?I know that under the Muslims in Spain NON-MUSLIMS were discriminated. In the 850's 50 CHRISTIANS were executed for criticism of Mohammed and Islam under the "death for blasphemy law".

While MAIMONIDES,the greatest Jewish philospher of the Middle Ages, who was from Spain,in his "Epistle to the Jews of Yemen"called Mohammed HA-MESHUGAH(the crazy man/lunatic/madman)

The Muslim guy who calls it the "Cordoba House"knows the typical non-Muslim media is ignorant of all this.He is laughing at us.

Minoria,

I used to eat at an Arabic restaurant in a city with a high percentage of Spanish speaking Latinos. The restaurant was called Al-Andalus. At the time I did not know this was the Arabic name for conquered Spain.

Just as with the 'Cordoba House' I have no doubt the namer was laughing right in our faces. It just seems the 'jokes' have escalated to a higher scale.

The war was lost when GWB declared Islam a "religion of peace." A few days after, all Muslim food vendors started to play their music on the streets of NYC. Before that, they were all very, very quiet. The message was clear - we are here, we are here to stay, and sooner or later, we will prevail.

The mosque near Ground Zero will be built. In time, it will be followed by more mosques. It will then that Americans learn that Cordoba House was really a Trojan Horse.

Makedon said...

In the picture with the mosques, the mosque that you see is actually a Byzantine church (converted in to a mosque) Aghia Sofia (Santa Sophia)of Konstantinople (Istanbul). This was the greatest of the Christian churches built by the greek mathematicians Anthemios and Isidoros of Trellis commissioned by byzantine emperor Justinian in the 600's A.D. This magnificent church inspired later on the St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome and others. It is a museum today. All mosques in Turkey are coppies of Aghia Sophia with the addition of the minarets. Most of them were designed by the great architect Sinan who was Greek and Christian but the Ottoman Turks converted him into Islam.
To try to pass a Christian Church as a mosque is even more offensive.

This is just wrong, on so many levels. May our God, whatever your faith calls Him or Her, forgive and protect us all if we allow this to happen. Most Believers who practice their faith also practice Respect and Tolerance for Non-Believers. A Non-Believer being defined (by most faiths) as one who believes in a faith different from your own and may refer to their God by a different name. The practice of Respect and Tolerance is a Human Right's Responsibility and Priviledge. Remember that the doctrine, books and histories of each faith were written or documented by humans...People; such as scribes, Heads of State, Heads of Church, and others in powerful authority. Each was writing and documenting events, using the techniques available; within the realities and beliefs of the times and his or her unique perspective on life. Yes, they were guided by their Divine Higher Power. Most faiths and most Human Right's issues have a similar foundation in the new Golden Rule..."Treat others as you want to be treated." What a sad place we have arrived at in the name of Religeon. Little respect or tolerance for American belief's on American soil. Drawing on the article, their faith is oppressive at best, while I am trying very hard to be respectful and tolerant; I just cannot justify allowing this to happen with any positive outcome. To allow this to be built at WTC would be an act of submission allowing the impression of Muslim victory memorial Site and that is NOT what should be there.

I am from another nation...and yes, a nation in which most of the people are Muslim...and being honest, I am Muslimah as well.

I used to live in America, and returned to my homeland soon after 11 Septembre 2001. I wanted to become an American citizen, but for reasons I will not mention here, I changed my mind.

I wanted to ask a question here, hoping you would not go into things like 'well, they wont let us build churches in thier nations', and simply answer my question.

I notice that there is an objection to building any Masjid, anywhere in the US. Can you tell how a nation can claim 'freedom of religion', and it's citizens also be against building of worship centres? Can you tell me if there has been any objections for building churches or other types of formal, recognized, wellknown religions in the US. Please cite your sources.

David Wood said...

Hi Nur,

I'm not sure where you got your information from, but there are thousands of mosques in the U.S., and new mosques are being built regularly. There is a major objection to building a mosque at Ground Zero, because that's where thousands of Americans were killed by Muslims. However, the government isn't going to stop the construction of a mosque. American citizens are voicing their opinion against the mosque, hoping that the owners will change their minds. Americans don't just believe in freedom of religion. We believe in freedom of speech as well. And Americans are free to tell Muslim leaders that they shouldn't build a mosque near the graves of so many who have been killed in the name of Islam.

I recently brought up the issue of a Mosque being built at Ground Zero to a friend, her husband who was reading the paper looked up whilst we were talking and asked me the following question: If the Islamists do build their monument to Islamic Supremacism what if it catches fire, do you honestly think the firemen will want to put the fire out?"

Good question, if they build their monument to Radical Islam would you put out the fire or watch a symbol of hatred burn? The Islamists are well aware at how horrified and appalled people are but they smirk and sneer and jeer at us because they have the political left in their back pocket.

Numerous people have asked why politicians are allowing it to be built, I ask how much and what nation is it being wired to?

Folks you have to listen to Chris Rosebrough's Fighting for the Faith for August 18 as soon as he puts it up. He spent an hour and 20 minutes saying why he doesn't believe this mosque is a problem (I think... I dunno I am TOTALLY CONFUSED by him the last few days). He is such a strong voice for truth usually, this whole thing he is doing has many people very upset.

his podcast can be heard at
http://www.fightingforthefaith.com
Just look for the August 18 show in a few days.

He spent the entire show on this topic yesterday. I saved a copy from the stream if you would like it before he puts it up. (he makes it available for free) Just email me.

terriergal said...

OK the original show Chris aired has been altered. I captured the original show and uploaded it here.

http://web.me.com/jaes.coyle/pj/FFTF20100818.mp3

I am currently going through both and transcribing them which is making me digest it in little bits very slowly. I am totally befuddled by this man, who normally has very good things to say and a strong focus on the gospel. If you notice there is a difference between the original and the new altered version at

http://www.fightingforthefaith.com/2010/08/ground-zero-mosque.html

The altered version NOW contains more of a focus on the gospel (which is not the issue he was commenting on at first at all, but is the issue his show is usually all about. It almost comes across as him being caught being hypocritical and then altering it to hide that, without explanation. Now granted, he may have mentioned it on one of the next FFTF shows, and I haven't gotten to hear those yet. But it really should be ON the page and I have told him so, so maybe he will add that note).

He sounds even angrier than before, ESPECIALLY in the part where he proclaims the gospel in the altered version. He demands to know who is preaching the gospel in lower Manhattan and let's focus on them. SO... I shared your video here with him, because he has seemed to imply throughout his podcast(s) that the people opposing this mosque and painting Islam as evil are just demagoguing, not concerned about the gospel, and simply have a hidden political agenda. (He says the same about those who are OK with the mosque as well, and I agree with him there.)

Chris is developing quite a following so I am worried for him and what this says about his thought process, and how it will influence his listeners. I am glad though that he always invites disagreement and to hold him accountable to the Scriptures, and asks people to contact him with their concerns. So if you have some ideas for him, I would beg you to try and decipher what he is saying, and talk to him about this.

Who is the idiot in this Of Mosque and Men video! He completely misinterpreted the quotes from the Qur'an. What an arrogant person he is for thinking he is so well educated about people of the Islamic faith and further more where does he get off making such bold and inaccurate statements about all Muslims. It is an absolute disgrace. The first quote he comments on about non believers refers to people who do not believe in GOD not people that do not believe in Islam. And it refers to guarding your faith as to not allow non believers to sway your faith in God. Allah for his education simply means God in Arabic. In addition he discusses how Muslims who conquered nations build places of worship over temples etc... Did you not study world history you stupid man. Almost every religious sect did the same exact thing!

Assalam o alaikum

First of all i want to know what is the need to create all this hype just because an Islamic center( which gives a chance for inter faith communication and debate) is constructed two blocks away from ground zero.. the drama that was caused led me to believe that a 1000ft terrorist training school or something was being built ON THE SPOT where twin towers used to be once!!!
HOWEVER i think that if the locals oppose this project so much then the muslim authorities(responsible for building this center) themselves should cease it instead of being stubborn... islam wants us to clear the differences rather than creating gaps..

umar said...

secondly, IF the locals are opposing the islamic center because they believe that it was 'muslim terroists' who crashed the planes into the twin towers, then they are clearly mistaken..
i dont need to refer to all those evidences and documentaries circulating in the internet, clearly indicating that 9/11 was an inside job..
A poll taken in 2006 by Scripps Howard and Ohio University showed that, "More than a third of the American public suspects that federal officials assisted in the 9/11 terrorist attacks or took no action to stop them so the United States could go to war in the Middle East!!!"

umar said...

regarding the verse 3:28, i would like to make some clarifications.. Allah has ordered the believers not to be 'friends' with disbelievers. Now this DOESN'T mean that the believers are stopped from being humble, polite, honest, rightful, and just towards the disbelievers... they are only abstained from being friends. Being friends here mean sharing of secrets or blind trust or spending too much time with them.

umar said...

the reason is that friendship paves the way to adapt to other person's lifestyle and thinking.. for eg. if a good person becomes a friend of a drunkard or a gambler, it is quite likely that the former is also going to be involved in drinking and gambling activities in the near future.. So in order to keep a believer from disbelieving, he is not allowed to be friends with the disbelievers..

sanych said...

So, umar, if I follow your logic, Mohammed Atta was a good Muslim, as he followed Allah's commandments precisely.

He studies and lived for quite some time in the Western society, did not make friends with kafirs, did not adapt Western thinking, did not share secrets about planned terrorist attack, and, thus, had no problems flying planes into the World Trade Center.

OK. I understand.

Then why are you asking why people object to building a place where similar ideas will be taught, so close to the site of his attack and the site where so many people died because of Quran's teaching?

Even more - why allow building such a place ANYWHERE in this country?

umar said...

@sanych, as i said you will find enough proofs in documentaries, articles and programs all around the world that point out to one fact- 9/11 was an inside job!!
you can get to know all these only if you TRY to know all these..
rather than blindly following and believing what a t.v anchor in a news channel or the govt. is saying. they show you what THEY want you to see..
the objective of 9/11 was clear- 1. govt popularity 2. promotion of anti-islamic sentiments
Following the attacks, President Bush's job approval rating soared to 90%-GALLUP
Numerous incidents of harassment and hate crimes were reported against Middle Easterners and other "Middle Eastern-looking" people in the days following the 9/11 attacks.-CNN 17 sept 2001

and as far as verse 5:51 is concerned, Quran was very true.
we all know that Jesus(PBUH) was killed by jews; and christians also had this in their traditions since the beginning until the last century when the history was changed and the blame was removed from jews. why??
surely jews and christians are in very close terms today and muslims isolated.. however it should have been the other way round.!
Israel has illegally occupied the land of the Palestinians and has been persecuting them for over 60 yrs. with full fledged support of the west.
9/11 attack was a false flag attack against muslims. done by USA to attack muslims so that israel can be safeguarded.
NOW isnt this in accordance with the verse 5:51??
here i would like to clarify that i am not against the jewish people.. in fact they are the people of the book! i only wrote all this because you want an answer to the quranic verses..

I don't understand these warped views of religion from both sides of the fence! The bottom line here is that we all Christians and Muslims believe in the same God. We are all God's children and i believe in my heart that God intended and intends for us to live peacefully together not fight against each other like this. For heaven sakes my husband practices Islam, he was born and raised in Morocco. I am a practicing Catholic and was raised her in the US. We could have been raised in more different cultures, however we respect each other and support each others choice to believe in and practice our own respective religions and we see fit. No one has the right to judge any person, the only being that has the privileged to judge is God! It is not very Islamic or Christian for anyone to keep another person from practicing their religion. Both the Qu'ran and the Bible say that you should treat others as you wish to be treated! You could all take a lesson on that!

At first sight, the photo of George Bush is funny...and then you think, wait a minute, that is the President of the united States of America...leader of the free world being made fun of. And then it isn't funny any more...neither is the photo of the Statue of Liberty or the photo-shipped Manhattan skyline. The USA is the ONLY country on God's Green Earth with the Trinity of freedom E Pluribis unim (From many one) Liberty and "In God We Trust"! America is the Promised Land from which freedom and liberty will be protected throughout the world...Ed

"Come out of the Cave America. It's dark in there"

This is my new favorite quote. This video is so incredibly powerful. What a great, informative video. You summed up everything perfectly.

CatholicItalianGal,

I suggest you read my blog post entitled, Do Muslims and Christians Worship the same God?

There is such a thing as absolute truth, and if you are a Christian, you (should) believe that Jesus Christ is THE TRUTH. As you will see when you read the post at the above link, it would be impossible for the religion of Islam and Christianity to BOTH be true at the same time. Why? Because they are diametrically opposed to each other!

Tolerance does not mean that we are to accept a lie when we know in our hearts that God's Truth has been revealed in His written Word, the Bible, as well as His Living Word - Jesus Christ.

Tolerance means that we DIFFER with the other side, while allowing the other side to exist in peace. Many Muslims do not want the other side to exist or to follow the admonition to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Instead, they want total dominance over other religions in this world, and persecute (even kill) those who disagree with their religion and beliefs.

I think that people reading this blog need to wake up, as the author says, and smell the jihad.
