Is Violence Taught in Islam?

I just wasted half an hour on Facebook quoting passages that some Muslim friends of mine are ignoring in an effort to assert that Islam is peaceful. Since they're ignoring these passages, I'm going to post them here in hopes that they'll be useful to somebody.

By the way, this is a slightly nuanced question. Usually we address the question "Is Islam a Religion of Peace?" and this allows people to provide peaceful passages, ignore all the violent ones, and answer the question by saying "Of course!" Well, now we're asking "Is Violence Taught in Islam?" No getting around it this time.

Qur'an 9:29:
Fight those who believe not in God nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by God and His Apostle, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

Qur'an 9:5:
But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

Bukhari 1.2.24:
Allah's Apostle said: "I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle..."

Bukhari 1.8.387:
Allah's Apostle said, "I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.'

Bukhari 4.53.392:
While we were in the Mosque, the Prophet came out and said, "Let us go to the Jews" We went out till we reached Bait-ul-Midras. He said to them, "If you embrace Islam, you will be safe. You should know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle, and I want to expel you from this land...

Bukhari 9.92.388:
"...Allah's Apostle said, I have been ordered to fight the people till they say 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah'... "

Muslim 1.33:
It has been narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah said: I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah...

Muslim 14.4294:
Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them... If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them...

It has been narrated by 'Umar b. al-Khattib that he heard the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) say: I will expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula and will not leave any but Muslim.

Can you provide details on why they took your accounts away? What kinds of things were you saying, and did they give any warning or explanation?

Thanks

That is nothing compared to reasoning with Muslims who are for the terrorists Hamas and Hizbulah. They complain the West violates hman rights all over the world AND find excuses for Muslim terrorists killing Israelis.

Nabeel, I was one of the first members of "Everybody draw a picture of mohamed day". When I joined there was only 50 or so people, I heavly promoted it and commented on it daily.

I noticed that on the day of the event i could go to the group but I could not post or upload anything. The next day I posted on my status "yeahh Friday" and then when I got home after work I could not sign in.

I recieved a email from FB saying that my accont had been suspended becasue they had recieved complaints that i was not who I said I was. Not using my real name etc...

Funny thing is that everyone on my FB friends, with the exception of three people, know me in real life. Most since the 4th grade. So i don't know who would of made such a complaint. And yes i did use my reall name etc... for my account.

Well FB wants a photo copy of a government ID, drivers lisence passport etc...

That is not going to happen.

Well thats all I know. It looks like if you posted to the group or uploaded a picture you got banned from FB as well.

I read something interesting this morning concerning Sura 2:65 (I bring it up because that Sura was mentioned a few days ago):

"Ye know too of those among you who transgressed upon the Sabbath, and we said, 'Become ye apes, despised and rejected.'"

Here is the transcribed document:

Zoomorphic Discriminatory Badges (9th century)

The Qadi, Ahmed b. Talib (9th century), compelled the dhimmis to wear upon their shoulder a patch of white cloth (riqa') that bore the image of an ape (for the Jews) and a pig (for the Christians), and to nail onto their doors a board bearing the sign of a monkey (p. 142).

[Muslims reviled Christians for eating pork, which they, like the Jews, considered unclean. According to the Quran (2:65), Jews were transformed into apes on account of their sins. See also: "Whomsoever God has cursed, and with whom He is wroth, and made some of them apes and swine, and worshippers of idols..." (Quran 5:65), which was considered by Muslim commentators on the Quran to refer to Jews and Christians. Translators note – P.B.F]

Nabeel,

I think this is a much more direct and less easily obfuscated question than "Is Islam a religion of peace?". Very nice post. Excellent supporting quotations.

The Bukhari quote from 1.2.24 is actually 1.2.25.
