Dead Yemeni Child Bride Tied Up, Raped, Says Mom

SHUEBA, Yemen (AP) -- A 13-year-old Yemeni child bride who bled to death shortly after marriage was tied down and forced to have sex by her husband, according to interviews with the child's mother, police and medical reports.

The girl's mother, Nijma Ahmed, 50, told the Associated Press that before her daughter lost consciousness, she said that her husband had tied her up and forced himself on her. ''She looked like she was butchered,'' she said about her daughter's injuries.

Elham Assi, 13, bled to death hours after she spoke to her mother and just days after she was married to a 23-year-old man. She died on April 2 in the deeply poor Yemeni village of Shueba, some 200 kilometers northwest of the capital. Her husband, Abed al-Hikmi, is in police custody.

The practice of marrying young girls is widespread in Yemen where a quarter of all females marry before the age of 15, according to a 2009 report by the country's Ministry of Social Affairs. Traditional families prefer young brides because they are seen as more obedient and are expected to have more children.

Legislation to ban child brides has been stalled by opposition from religious leaders. There has been no government comment over the case.

The girl -- one of eight siblings -- was pushed into marriage after an agreement between her brother and her future-husband to marry each other's sisters to avoid having to pay expensive bride-prices -- a common arrangement in Yemen, the poorest country in the Middle East.

According to police notes from the interrogation of the husband, he was upset because he could not consummate their relationship and felt under pressure to prove his manhood.

Assi's mother said she also tried to persuade her daughter to have sex with her husband so as not to shame the family.

Al-Hikmi took his young bride to a nearby medical clinic, asking a doctor there to administer her tranquilizers so she would not resist his advances. The clinic said it refused.

Al-Hikmi then obtained performance enhancing pills, according to the police interrogation, and that night completed the act while she screamed.

The next day, he returned to the same medical clinic carrying Assi because she could not walk.

''I told him not to go near her for at least ten days,'' said Dr. Fathiya Haidar. She said Assi's vaginal canal was ripped.

A forensic report obtained by the AP showed that Assi's injuries were much more extensive, including extensive tearing around the vagina and rectum, suggesting that there might have been additional intercourse after the clinic visit.

Her mother said she visited Assi later that day, where she found her daughter fading in and out of consciousness.

''She whispered in my ear that he had tied her up and had sex with her violently,'' she said. ''I said to her husband, what have you done, you criminal?''

She said al-Hikmi told her that the young bride was just possessed by spirits and said he would take her to a folk healer to cast them out. Hours later, Assi was dead.

''She asked me to stay beside her,'' her mother said.

The practice of marrying young girls is widespread in Yemen and has drawn the attention of international rights groups seeking to pressure the government to outlaw child marriages.

''Early marriage places girls at increased risk of dropping out of school, being exposed to violence, abuse and exploitation, and even losing their lives from pregnancy, childbirth and other complications,'' said UNICEF's regional director Sigrid Kaag, in a statement Wednesday condemning the death.

A February 2009 law set the minimum age for marriage at 17, but it was repealed and sent back to parliament's constitutional committee for review after some lawmakers called it un-Islamic.
The committee is expected to make a final decision on the legislation this month.

The issue of Yemen's child brides received widespread attention three years ago when an 8-year-old girl boldly went by herself to a courtroom and demanded a judge dissolve her marriage to a man in his 30s. She eventually won a divorce.

In September, a 12-year-old Yemeni child-bride died after struggling for three days in labor to give birth, a local human rights organization said. Source.

How these people can defend this filth of a supposed religeon is behond me.

It shows how depraved and deplorable islam truly has become. satan truly is showing the world his true followers. time will come when they will be wiped from the face of the earth and no memory of them will remain.

I for one am looking forward to making a trip to the opening of the rebuilt and dedicated temple of Solomon.

poor islam will be left outside nashing teeth and wailing like banchies.

Yahya Snow said: "Sad."

Also sad:

Sahih al-Bukhari 7:65--Narrated Aisha that the prophet wrote the marriage contract with her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old. Hisham said: "I have been informed that Aisha remained with the prophet for nine years (i.e. till his death)."

Sunan Abu Dawud 2116--Aisha said, "The Apostle of Allah married me when I was seven years old." (The narrator Sulaiman said: "Or six years."). "He had intercourse with me when I was 9 years old."

Fortunately, Aisha didn't die of the same vaginal hemorrhaging that so many other young victims of Islam have died from.

Yahya Snow said "Sad"

Although the death of this child is sad the ISLAMIC PRACTICE OF CHILD BRIDES is OUTRAGEOUS.

Also sad and Outrageous is from The Reliance on the Travelor. For those that dont know this is the RULE book on Sunni Islam, this is Sharia law which Yahya Snow wants.

e10.3 When a woman who has been made love to performs the purificatory bath, and the male's sperm afterwards leaves her vagina, then she must repeat the ghusl if two conditions exist:
(a) that she is not a child. but rather old enough to have sexual gratification (A: as it might otherwise
be solely her husband;s sperm);

So Yahya Snow or any other muslim what is a MALES SPERM DOING IN A CHILDS VAGINA?

From laws on divorce

n9.9 The waiting period for a woman who does not menstruate, whether prepubescent or
postmenopausal, is three months.

Yahya Snow or any other Muslim what is a prebusent child doing being married and why does her husband have to wait 3 months to divorce her?

In case Yahya Snow wants to say that this is in reference to a pre engagment and has nothing to do with Sex. The same book "The Reliance on the Travelor" tells the Muslims why there is a waiting period

From Section N9.0
" Meaning the period in which a woman waits (N: before she may remarry) to verify that she is not pregnant,

And finally from from section N9.2

"n9.2 A waiting period is obligatory for a woman divorced after intercourse, whether the husband and wife are prepubescent, have reached puberty, or one has and the other has not.

To add a reference to Fat Man's case . . .

According to the Qur'an, if a man divorces a wife whom he has not had sex with, there is no waiting period:

Qur'an 33:49--O ye who believe! When ye marry believing women, and then divorce them before ye have touched them, no period of 'Iddat have ye to count in respect of them: so give them a present. And set them free in a handsome manner.

But 65:4 tells Muslims who are divorcing prepubescent girls that the waiting period is three months. So if (1) there is no waiting period if the Muslim hasn't had sex with the girl, and (2) Muslims are commanded to observe a waiting period when divorcing prepubescent girls, this can only mean that Muslims were having sex with prepubescent girls (as Muhammad himself obviously did).

Yahya obviously is repulsed by this, or he wouldn't be arguing against it so vehemently. But it's a simple fact that the Qur'an allows sex with prepubescent girls, and that Muhammad himself practiced this. The solution, Yahya, isn't to reinterpret 1400 years of Islamic teaching to bring it in line with Western values. Rather, the solution is to reject Islam.

So in conclusion Yahya Snow or any other Muslim. Child Brides and having sex with CHILD BRIDES (pre pubesent girls) is as Islamic as Islam gets. It is in the Quran, it is in the Sunna of the Hadeeths and it is in Sharia LAW.

One more thing. The translation of The Reliance on the Traveler comes with a Letter of RECOMMENDATION from Al Azhar University in Egypt it doesn't get any more Islamic then that.

David Wood said...

And as an extra conclusion I'll add: If Muslims want to reject their greatest collections of ahadith, and ignore their greatest commentators, and reinterpret clear teachings of the Qur'an, is there anywhere they would draw the line?

If we can't trust Muhammad when he said it's okay to have sex with prepubescent girls, why should we trust him when he said that there's no god but Allah? If we can't trust all the ahadith that say Muhammad had sex with a nine-year-old, why should we trust the ahadith that say Muslims should pray five times per day?

While Muslims like Yahya believe they're rescuing Islam, they're actually destroying it (by casting doubt on all of their best sources).

Thanks for the help, Yahya!

@Fatman...
Those issues have been discussed at length on my blog

As for the Shafi fiqh manual...you do not need to tell me about it..I have it and am studying it.

Any clarifications needed on the Reliance of the Traveller will be posted on my blog. You (Fatman) are not the only one to ask for clarification on this book...I was due to produce an article earlier but have been held up...God willing I will discuss some of its contents

However...the bulk of the issues being presented have ALREADY been discussed by myslef.

Peace

Yahya Snow, I dont know what you need to clearly? It seems pretty clear to me and anyone else who has a basic command of the English Language.

I have noticed something when discussing Islam with Muslims, especially reverts.

Yahya I"m wondering if you have ever been diagnosed with a learning disability, specifically a reading comprehension problem?

Yahya, we will only ask clarification from you about the Reliance of the Traveler if we can post comments on your blog as well. If you will not allow our comments on your blog then we will not bother asking for any "clarification", since the only thing that will be clear to is that you are not interested in dialoguing about Islam. Your only objection will then be to have you looking good on your own blog without anyone questioning your "clarifications".

I'm glad you are against the incident. It's the right feeling to have. Now I hope Al-Azhar tries to really stop such future incidents, plus other human rights violations.
